Anacortes Ferry - Anacortes, WA

Anacortes Ferry TerminalAnacortes, Washington is the gateway to the San Juan Islands. For those planning to experience the island lifestyle of the San Juan Islands your first stop will be the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. Owned and operated by the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Anacortes Ferry services; Lopez Island, Shaw Island, Orcas Island, Friday Harbor & Sidney B.C. with daily operation. If you have never traveled the Anacortes Ferry before, there are a few things that you need to know.

Traveling on the Anacortes Ferry is a necessity for people that live on the island. They understand how early they need to arrive at the ferry terminal to be sure that they get on. The Anacortes Ferry never seems to hold as many cars as it needs to. This always holds true if you are in a hurry. The most important thing to know about traveling the Anacortes Ferry is that you need to get to the terminal early. On a slow day, the WSDOT recommends that you get to the terminal 45 to 60 minutes before your ferry leaves. If it is a busy day (especially in the summer or holiday weekend) you should really plan on getting to the ferry terminal 90 - 120 minutes before your ferry leaves.

Since you will be spending a lot of time waiting for the ferry, you need to plan on activates to keep yourself and your family busy. If you are traveling by yourself you should be able to get away with just bringing a good book. If you have the car loaded up with the kids, then you might want to pack something a little extra for the wait. While DVD's and other electronics that run off the car battery can be great during travel, 2 hours can heavily drain on your car battery. You do not want your battery to die on the ferry. Not only will everyone around you be mad for making them wait, you will have to allow the big bumper car to push you off the ferry. This is an experience that is avoidable by bringing some old fashioned car games.

As far as finding the Anacortes Ferry Terminal, it is not too difficult. Take Hwy 20 north to Anacortes. Turn right, on Commercial Street. Follow Commercial Street through town and take a left on 12th Street. Follow 12th Street west out of Anacortes and the ferry terminal is just a couple of miles away. Have a happy and safe travel on the Anacortes Ferry.
