Santa Clarita Fires - The Smoke Has Cleared

Our fires are out and the smoke has cleared, but the terrible smell lingers on. Especially early in the morning or when it is raining, it smells like a rotten barbeque. Has anyone experienced this before? I was just wondering how long this smell might persist. I don't have the smell or any smoke damage inside of my house. It just hits you when you open the door.

Depends on the winds blowing out the air, but it should clear when things start growing again.  Don't worry fires give new life.  It doesn't take that long.

Just be thankful you still have your home. It will most likely take some time. I think the fires are still smoldering in some areas. Hopefully you get a good rain storm to help with the smell. God Luck.

Hi Connie!  I'm so glad your home is alright.  I have a friend in Santa Clarita - the flames got up to the backyard of the house across the street from his and the wind blew the flames back on themselves so the homes on his street were saved.  He said it looks like a war torn city and that the winds caused as much damage as the fires did. I think I'd probably cry if I drove through there right now.

The last few days here in Orange County we've had fog or low clouds or something like that - I'm thinking that if Santa Clarita is also experiencing that fogginess feeling that it might be trapping the smoky smell - once it lifts the smell will diminish.

We had a wildfire near us when I lived in Palmdale - was as close as about 7 houses away - the wind must've blown the opposite direction after the fire because we never had the smell issue - we did have lots of ash though.

Good luck to you and I'm really glad your home is alright!
