JI Barron Elementary Visits The Marksville Indian Mounds!
This past week students from JI Barron Elementary visited the Marksville Indian Mounds. Our exciting trip included a museum, Indian burial mounds, a hands on pottery exhibit, spear throwing, and a quick trip to the gift shop!
What better picture of a museum than one with a line of eager kids streaming in? The exhibits were detailed enough to keep adults interested, yet at the same time were able to engage the children.
The Native Americans would travel from miles around to bury their dead. At one time the Mississippi River flowed through the area. Yes, the Mississippi River does alter her course from time to time. Amazing!
Many museums present history in a dry, stuffy manner. The mere mention of history is enough to bore many students (and adults) to tears. Think anyone feel asleep during the spear throwing class??
For most of these kids dinner means a choice of apple slices or fries with the happy meal. The patient tour guide explained how Native Americans prepared meals. The kids were then allowed a chance to work with some of the tools.
And what would any museum be without a gift shop? My daughter found this neat dream catcher while her friend scored a local hand made doll. What did I find you ask? That's right, the bill!
Want to explore the Marksville Historic Site in person? The admission is a VERY reasonable 4 dollars per adult. Kids under 12 are free. Ready to move to Central Louisiana and live amongst the history? Give Doug Rogers with Bayou Properties Realty a call today (318) 613-1994.
