Parallel Parking and Life Goes On

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

While driving around I passed nearby our local Dept. of Public Safety office where I saw a teenager with their car practicing to pass the parallel parking portion of the driving exam. It brought back memories of what seems like the most critical hurdle to surmount in those early days of anxiety in passing the road portion of the Driver's License test.

To me the parallel parking was a metaphor in our world to remember that "Life Goes On." Daily in the real estate world I hear the Chicken Littles about me saying how they don't know what to do. Business is off, lenders down the street are laying off people, homebuilders are closing their doors, where did the buyers go? etc.

The point is, KEEP IT ALL IN PERSPECTIVE! In the real estate and housing world as anyone who has been in the business many years or watched it from afar knows, nothing ever stays the same. It is not static. The market is dynamic. Today's bad news is tomorrow's history. Stay positive. Talk to any hard working REALTOR or office and you will find out people are STILL, believe it of not, buying and selling homes. The conditions and stats may have changed, but activity is still there. Business models and marketing approaches may need to change. But just roll with the times. If one is in the business for the long term (AND LOVES IT), stay upbeat and share your hopes (and concerns) with others who can keep you "pumped up."

For the teenager in the car bumping over and over into the cones, next week's test at the Driver License bureau looks like a big mountain to climb. But despite the anxiety, they will pass, get through the quickened heartbeat and look back on it someday and laugh.

So take a deep breath and relax. Everything will be ok.

Great post, back in the day...my first driving experience alone was a Friday night foot ball game...on the way home, stopped by this NEW FAST FOOD PLACE called McDonald's...backed into the exit sign...haven't looked in the rear view mirror since...

striving to go forward always with a positive...like the little red engine, "WHO COULD", CAN, and WILL...

Gary,

So true. Sales - you have to take the good with the bad. Sales numbers are lower than a few years back but there still are sales. Good agents will get their share and wait for things to pick up. Great time to work on systems. My wife and I are working on the systems we always wanted to have in place when the market was going crazy and din't have the time.

I remember that was my first task. The officer opened the door and the curb was about 8 feet away.

I just showed number 1 on google and yahoo on a term I worked very hard on, so I guess it all worked out in the long run.

Karen, I see we are of like minds. Somewhere in my teenage past I remember running over the metal trash cans backing out the driveway and having them roll down the street all dented up. Why I didn't turn around or use the rear view mirror I don't know, but my father WAS NOT impressed at that time with my driving ability.

Brings back memories of my teenage years and backing over the garbage can the first day I drove to high school!       Great advice,   it will be OK.    People are still buying and selling and moving on.

Great post, Gary, and it brings back memories of my own parallel parking nightmare during my driving test.  Now that I'm duly licensed, I use the "Braille" method - back up till your rear hits the car behind, then pull up until you touch the car in front.

You know Patricia the bump method works just as well. We all better not lose that active license and have to study and practice parallel parking all over again. I think they should just design cars to turn the wheels sideways and just drive in that way!

All firsts are intimidating, and most we end up looking back on with amusement. For newer agents a down turned market is a first and very intimidating. For seasoned agents who've seen it all before it's not such a big deal.

Also, downturns are opportunities to morph into something better. The winds of change can make us stronger.
