Will Glavine be a Brave again?

With the issues the Braves had surrounding pitching during the 2007 season it looms large that a proven starter could once again rejoin the Atlanta Braves. Glavine did file for free agency and though he has dismissed it as "procedural" it is hopefully indicative that he is seriously considering returning home to Atlanta. Glavine has said that he will only consider playing for the Mets or the Braves. I think he would make an excellent addition to the Braves lineup. Smoltz and Glavine together agian! Throw (very gently) a healthy Hampton in there, along with Hudson, James and Reyes and Atlanta would have a starting rotation that could stack up (and stare down) any in MLB. I do realize that the starters can't carry it alone but if you take a look at the talent in the current Braves bullpen, Soriano, Dotel, Acosta, Yates, Villareal, Moylan, Mahay, Ascanio, and Cormier, the tools for a strong pitching season are there. I have heard it said that due to Glavine's age he is a temporary solution at best. I think this diminshes the positive impact he can have on the young pitchers in the Braves organization. In my opinion, it would be a smart move (both short term and long term) for the Braves management to begin discussion with Glavine on November 12th when they are permitted to formally do so.

Age or not, he will end up back in Atlanta and it's probably what they need right now. Look at the Red Sox with Schilling...he proved you don't have to go for the gusto and speed, just go for the finesse and find the spots! Braves could have a good starting rotation with Glavine in there with Smoltz, just like the old days.

Reliable, consistent pitching was the obvious issue this past season. Andruw has been my favorite Brave for a while and even though he had a slow season his defensive prowess (think multiple gold gloves) and his normally strong bat will definitely be missed. I am anxious to see who the Braves will bring in to replace him. I have heard lots of rumors and speculation but nothing specific. I'll have to wait and see I guess.

Do you all think the Braves might make an offer to Alex Rodriguez? Letting Andruw Jones go will make more money available for free agents.

Eddy - While A-Rod would be a benefit to most teams (who could afford his price tag), I do not see the Braves moving away from their very reliable and a fan favorite, Chipper Jones. Chipper has played his entire career in ATL and is seen as a team leader. He is strong both offensively and defensively. Now if we can just keep him away from those

Glavin is a winner, plain and simple...he may be old and have a huge choke job on the last spot of his resume....but I wouldn't mind him throwing for my hometown White Sox.

I agree, he can only be an asset to whatever team he goes to.

Guy's only made at least 25 starts per year since 1987!!!! Don't thik he's a 1 or a 2 anymore...but I'd love him on my squad.

I think he would be great to have in the rotation with Smoltz, Hudson, James, and Reyes. His ability to mentor the younger Braves and to have available for say 25 games could be the extra push the Braves have been needing. Haven't heard any word yet today on talks he may be having.

OR you can buy what former special assistant to the GM, Keith Law (not George Costanza), is putting on ESPN:

Glavine may try to pitch one more year, but he'd be wise to remember the ignominious end of another lefty's career (that of Steve Carlton). Carlton didn't know when to walk away, and after a terrible 1987, he tried to come back one more time and gave up 19 runs in nine-plus innings before he was released. Glavine's 2007 wasn't as bad as Carlton's last full season, but he posted one of the worst earned-run averages of his career, one of the worst ground-ball rates of his career and one of his worst strikeout rates of his career. Glavine's stuff is down. His fastball is 80-84 mph, his change at 74-75 with visible slowing of his arm, his slow-roller curve at 75-77 -- and none of it able to miss bats. Glavine has to pitch hitters away and avoid contact; if he's not getting something extra on the outside corner, he's doomed. He'll get an offer if he wants to pitch, but even in a big park in the National League, he's a 50-50 shot to get released or retire midyear. It's been a great run, Tom -- don't push it.

Wow! That is pretty harsh! Now you said this Keith Law was the Special Assistant to the GM of the Toronto Blue Jays and now is an ESPN Blogger and sometimes commentator on a Boston talk radio program. Well I hope Glavine pays special attention to him. <<<smile>>> I wonder why he is no longer with Scouts, Inc? Sounds like working for the ESPN alternative to college scouting programs would be a good fit with someone who can predict the demise of an athlete as aptly as he predicted the demise of Carlton in '87. I am simply a fan of sports and do not claim any expertise, only opinions. I do hope Law's prediction does not come to pass. Most Braves fans would like to see the return of Glavine.

What if they put Glavine in the bullpen as a middle reliever? Smoltz was the Braves closer for a few years remember that?

Eddy - I hope that if the Braves do acquire Glavine he will be an asset in whatever pitching capacity suits his talents at that time. I definitely remember Smoltz as a closer and do appreciate his transition into a starter.

Glavine is currently in talks with the Braves but no word yet. How about that jerk A-rod? He ran back to the Yankees with his tail between the legs.

Was shocked...seems like all this $350 million talk was a bunch of self promotion that in the end only makes him seem like, to use your words, a jerk. I am glad to hear it was $275 for ten years (still an enormous amount) rather than the $350. Still awaiting word on Glavine.

Rich------ the funny thing is that A-$Rod is a regular season superstar but a playoff choker. In the playoffs the Indians did pitch to him and he still couldn't get it done. Enjoy your "investment" Yankees it will surely pay off.

Glavine and the Braves have initiated talks and it looks as though it might be a done deal by the end of this weekend. Here is to Tommy coming back to the ATL one more time.

wow $275 million for 10 years , A-Rod sure killed his reputation by opting out during the 8th inning of game 4 of the world series.

Glavine is a Brave again just all we expected, i wonder how much they signed him for?

Eddy, it is reported as an 8 million dollar 1 year contract. It will change the looks of the braves this year.
