Pennsylvania Dutch New Years Tradition - Pork & Sauerkraut

By
Real Estate Agent with KW Elite

Growing up near South Central PA we participated in an annual New Years Day tradition, pork and sauerkraut. It is the belief of the PA Dutch culture that partaking in this meal helps guaranteed good luck in the coming new year. Today it starts with a crock pot , a roasting pork and several lbs. of fresh sauerkraut. We cook ours all day long(9-10 hours). Added to the meal are two other familiar staples, mashed potatoes and apple sauce. you can also add fresh bread and apple butter. Also to help local citizens enjoy this holiday feast, many fire companies are serving this meal "family style" all across Lancaster Co..Well we've just completed our New Years Day meal and are now assured of good luck in 2012 ! Hoping you have a great one !

Michael, one of my favorite meals is spare ribs with sauerkraut...a little rye bread on the side with lots of butter and I'm a happy camper...even like to add Tabasco for a little heat.

Hi Michael...I'm with ya...I use a crockpot also...8-10 hours...Mashed for sure but we have Leseur peas with it too...Best part about the whole process is the aroma of it cooking all day...I'm a 'pile of potatoes in the middle of the plate and put the kraut and the juice right on it' type of guy...Enjoy the New Year.

Never realized this was such a tradition till this year, heard it from several different people and we love sauerkraut, or zuurkoll as the Dutch say back in Holland.

Hi Michael - I love pork roast and sauerkraut.  Comes my midwest roots, I think.  I have some pork in the freezer and sauerkraut in the pantry.  Hmmm.  Guess I better get cooking.
