What do you think of Alarm Companies and having an alarm system?

At my home, we just reactivated our alarm system with ADT after not having one for years. We did this after installing new windows, which left alarm wiring exposed and in need of reconnecting.

The process went fairly well, but alarm company services are all subcontracted and getting the installers out and getting the job done was difficult. They also left a mess for me to clean up.

The real issue is, do we need alarm systems at all?

When I show homes 95% do not have an alarm active to disarm. The vast majority do have systems installed (but perhaps not activated).

Your opinions are welcome.

I've never showed a home that has an active alarm system, but many many with bleeping alarms going off. :) I suppose a great amount of need depends on location, location, location.

I hate showing homes with alarm systems! They are such a pain!  LOL! I've had them go off and we end up not showing the home because it irritates my buyer so much and the first thing they say is "Is this not a safe neighborhood?"

I wonder how these companies stay in business. I have one because my wife feels safer with it.
