**Success is in the Eye of the Beholder**

After Active Rain announced that they would not have the moderators (the volunteer members) critiquing our writing anymore, I knew that the new critiquers of our writing would have a different perspective as well. No matter what the "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder".

I was actually inspired by Bob Stewart's post yesterday morning  Sometimes this place cracks me up, Sometimes it pisses me off  It's all in good blogging etiquette.  In any case, he realized what we go through sometimes and now understands when we are "buying into someone elses kaka" and how we feel.    :)

Yesterday evening my husband and I watched the Disney movie "Ratatouille". The reason my husband and I continuously watch "children's" movies are because they are entertaining as well as ALWAYS have a lesson to be learned. We didn't notice these learning lessons when we were children and now in our older years we sure catch on to to those lessons.

It will be a great joy to watch shows as this with our grandchildren (should we ever be blessed with any) and be able to talk about the lesson at the end of the movie.

Towards the end of the movie, the "Food Critic", and "Ego" was his name (appropriate name don't you think?) did a review of the restaurant and the following are quotes in bold.

After the quote is my relation to the Active Rain staff who are forever trying to please everyone as well as the support from Active Rain members. Sometimes they are appreciated and sometimes not. More often than not, they go through learning lessons too.

  • We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgement. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. Active Rain has pretty level headed people working in front and behind the scenes so be rest assured that what you were given for free would be appreciated for the gifts it is giving you back. Google juice without a doubt and big time exposure to the internet as well as being recognized once in awhile with a shiny gold star or featured on http://www.localism.com/
  • But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents - new creations. The new needs friends. I was welcomed with open arms from near the beginning of becoming a member. There were less than 19k members (I should have checked....BOB? Can you check for me? I keep wanting to know and keep forgetting to ask) I may not have been a newbie to blogging but I sure learned quickly. How? Giving support to the next person and the next person. Okay, now this place is huge but everyone has a hand in new ones coming aboard while supporting the old ones as well.
  • Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. Just as Active Rain and the undying support of some of our members give. I really value the friendships I have made along the way and believe me...it's those people who make up this Active Rain Community who rock my world and astound me with their writing.
  • In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: Anyone can cook. But I realize only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more. Anyone can blog. Not everyone can become the great all mighty blogger but a great blogger can come from anywhere. We have an astounding amount of writers here. I don't care how long anyone has been in the Real Estate Industry or has been blogging. Botttom line. It will always be quality....not quantity ...that in my eyes are the true artists in life.

The lesson is this (remember I am critiquing this movie as well) as seen in my eyes. Ego is the false self and craves attention and needs more and more and more to fill the center of self where Ego consumes. Funny though, when confronted with a revelation of sorts (the great cook in the story was a rat...yes, a rat) we turn our opinions and negative criticism around and find a positive outlook. Then, and only then does our whole persepective of life, on business and even writing or socializing with our peers on Active Rain change. What a concept. There are learning lessons every day. I AM a success in one more lesson learned.

Giving support can be the biggest gift I can give to someone and it is also a start to ego "finding the real truth at the center of self".

WooHoo, This post is really putting a strain on my Brian this morning. But I like a lot!!! You made so many good points I truly don't know what to add so will just say ditto.

I do however want to say I feel the same way about "kiddie" movies. My all time favorite movie is Shrek. I've seen it about 20 times and love it every time I watch it. I also LOVE watching these movies with the grand kids. When your time comes for that you are going to be slobbering all over the place:)

Bryant:  Are you referring to Brian?  Hahha!  Just go watch the movie Ratatouille with your grandchildren. Then you'll understand :) I'm waiting for Shrek three to come out!!!! I think it's next week! I slobber all over anyway. Funny how when we get older the meaning of stuff has MORE meaning!

Sally--When my husband and I were just out of college, we would take our nieces to the movie as cover so it didn't look weird to be 20 something and at a Disney flick. Now we go as a family to Disney/Pixar movies and there is always a lesson. You are a wonderful supporter of so many here in the rain...Good post.

11/12/2007 11:06 AM by Teri Eckholm, Realtor® Anoka County MN (Keller Williams Premier Realty)

Teri: Ha!  That's funny!  I love Disney movies and now that I'm older I catch on to the lessons...Thanks Teri...giving back is a part of universal law....not just Active Rain...Hand positive out ...get it back....Hand out negative get that back....ah....such is life.

Sally, I'm sure Bryant is referring to Brain & not Brian -- though the two often get confused!  :)  Ratatouille looks like a fun movie that I'll have to watch soon.  I enjoy this post and everything that you bring to Active Rain.

WooHoo Sally, My wife and I prefer kid's movies too. As for "lessons" I have a little different take than you. I often times object to what they are trying to "teach" children. My politics and life philosophy are at odds with the Hollywood types that put out the movies.

As for the "moderators" here on AR, I miss them. Bob is a nice guy but I don't think he really knows what is good material for this real estate blogsite. Many posts about controversial but meaningful topics go unnoticed while "popular" writers keep getting featured.

What I have learned is to write for consumers and not worry about how my material is received here on ActiveRain.

Fran: I've been slow the past month...started with the leak in my bathroom :) I do what I can here to brighten someones day...give a positive note...and hey...I know sometimes it makes a difference. Can you imagine how intimidated I was when I started?  Everyone seemed to see everything I wrote..haha. Thanks Fran...I know you do!

Brian:  Oh, no...I'm sure he meant Brian :)  I noticed a lot of people spell your name Brain (typing too fast and letters get mixed) Thanks Brian....I too see the giving heart you have....and thanks again for helping with the group....I am contantly weeding stuff out that doesn't belong so I can keep it a quality group.

11/12/2007 11:19 AM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), HAWAII Real Estate & HAWAII Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Sally, I bought the movie 3 days ago, so far we have watched it 5 times. The lesson learned from the movie for the kids is great, that they are all (if they try) are capable of doing what they want. And for us, you said it the best my friend. This has to become a featured post.

11/12/2007 11:23 AM by Camarillo CA Real Estate Agent/ Mana Tulberg (Beach View Real Estate)

Bill: The whole purpose of this post is for the support I and others give to the members and Active Rain. And just what would you consider a "good post"? Do you really think only popular writers get featured or writers who write well?  No matter what....my belief is that we are all human and have different opinions...so no matter who is moderating they will have different "tastes" of writers as well.

I think Bob and all the other behind the scenes and right up front people do a darn good job. Being grateful is another thing Bill. I am grateful for what is given me. If not for the GIVING from Active Rain we would not have this network to blog and socialize.

You always mention "popular" writers and getting featured. Remember, there are over 57k members. And just how would you judge people get featured....a thousand a day? A hundred a day?

In any case, you said you "learned is to write for consumers and not worry about how my material is received here on ActiveRain" but yet say that right after complaining about how THEY (not just Bob) pick featured articles....hmmm...

P.S. As for what "Hollywood is trying to teach". Have you watched this movie?  My goodness...you having a bad day?

Mana: Thanks so much!  Lessons were great in this movie. I was crying when they were reading Ego's Restaurant review in the newspaper....I just had to write....I went looking for the quote and there it was in Wikipedia!

Neal:  No kidding.  Try and turn my nice positive post into a complaint department.

Thomas:  Go watch the Robinson's too!  That was a good one.

Oh, my goodness...when did you grow up???? This is an awesome post, Sally. Lessons learned...I just wonder when I'm going learn any! I love that little movie! My son is 21 and an animator so we go to all the animated movies....we' LOVED this one!

11/12/2007 11:49 AM by Linda Scanlan ~Selling All of North Texas (Hall Team Homes)

I totally missed Bob's post, I'll check it out shortly.  Sis, I haven't watched the movie but I like how you morphed it into a very unique and interesting post.  What you continue to bring to Active-Rain is nothing short of amazing.

11/12/2007 11:50 AM by Jason Sardi, Pennsylvania Mortgage Broker (First Choice Equity Group Inc.)

Sally-You probably spent as much time on this "review" as you did on watching the Movie :) :)

Don't ya just love the ego's, the complainers.....the "hey look at me" ones, and all the while the best of the best are right there, sometimes found, sometimes not, but they keep plugging away.  That is our AR Gift....as so many said our treasure.......and add to that Bob, the old Moderators, and the new ones too.  Everyone that contributes for the good of the Group, not just for their own "Ego" :)

Anyway, back to Disney....I love the old Disney Movies, and yes there are many messages in them, and with each time you watch one, the message can change depending on what is going on at the time.

11/12/2007 11:56 AM by Kathy McGraw ~ Calif Broker (CELLing Realty)

I love it!  Thanks for your support :)

Sally - This is a very interesting and well-written post.  Ratatouille is one of my son's new favorites (we have it on DVD and the kids watch it in the van).  As you mentioned, kids' movies always have a lesson to be learned.  Great job here!

11/12/2007 12:00 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason: I love these movies!!!  I usually cry....just like with Mr. Robinson (saw that the day before)....don't know about Transformers (my husband picked that and I am dreading sitting through that one?)  And kid's movies aren't just for kids. I have learned they make it for us adults who may be watching it with children too.

11/12/2007 12:03 PM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), HAWAII Real Estate & HAWAII Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Sally, I have not seen the movie, but sounds like one to check out at Christmas when everyone is home. However, your points are well taken and I'll try not to think about this post when I am watching. LOL

Yes it is true, AR has brought many friendships and bloggers together, I am still learning so much through everyone generosity to share and give. You are one of the best.

Hi Sally,
Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder and as you stated, the same with taste on quality of posts.  I think Bob and his crew are doing a fantastic job.  Anyone who has ever done a Week in Review can attest to what a difficult job they have.  Perhaps those that complain should concentrate more on giving and less on receiving.

11/12/2007 01:53 PM by Cynthia Tilghman, Realtor® Onslow County NC Home Specialist (Kingsbridge Realty, Inc)

Such deep truths from a children's movie.  Of course these movies are as much for adults today as well.  My wife and i went to see this when it came out too.  Thanks.

11/12/2007 02:18 PM by Bradenton Florida Real Estate - Dan Forbes (Sarasota Metro Properties)

Cynthia: Ah.....exactly!  It's so easy to criticize (as Ego said in his quote from the movie) and not realize the good things people are doing.

Dan: Children can learn life lessons from these movies...and to tell you the truth so can a lot of us. It's at Blockbuster!

11/12/2007 02:20 PM by Celeste "SALLY" Cheeseman (RA), HAWAII Real Estate & HAWAII Relocation (Century 21 Liberty Homes -Mililani, Hawaii)

Sally, one of the greatest gifts AR has given me is the opportunity to write.  It's practice ground for some of the things I hold in my heart.

No, I may not get noticed but I'm learning how to write, sometimes what to write, and why I should write.  On top of that I get to make friends, establish business relationships, and learn.

I get to learn about this career I've chosen, I get to see from other's perspectives and I get to learn about people, and I get to learn about myself.

What more could one ask for?

Woo Hoo Sally...

Art...Words...Love...Egos...Movies...Music...Beauty...Success...

It is just so "in the eye of the beholder"...Who gets to say it's not? :)

P.S. @#$%$$  %$^%^%^% &^*^*^  &^%$%^ ...  @$# A L%$%. Use your imagination on that one. A little game of connect the symbols :)

TLW...ROAR!

Sally, I have to admit I haven't seen hardly any of the children's movies excpt for Toy Story. I guess I would stay in the loop if I had grandkids. Lucky U! Anyway...I think AR was up to 21,000 when I joined up. It sure has come a long way. I'm not much of a joiner and fiercely guard my time.

If Mamas not makin money ain't nobody here makin money!

All the shows I watch on TV(my favorite shows) are just DVR rercordings...I only watch when I have time to. Movies get mailed in from Blockbuster and they get played when I get to them also. I have a lot of nature behind my house and that keeps me grounded. My favorite kid movie may be the Christmas Story. I never get tired of it because it reminds me of how I grew up.

11/12/2007 02:55 PM by Lizette Fitzpatrick, Kentucky Real Estate (Central Kentucky - Prudential Don Foster)

TLW:  Ahhhhh....the symbols tell a story too!  Plenty of interpretation...  Hmm... who gets to say?  Lol! Gotcha!

Lizette: I don't have grandkids yet.....I just like children's movies as much as any other (except for gore) I have more time on my hands lately.... you are just you....I got hubby and another business....so it's all good.  Main point here is the gratitude and support we give here....because that's just the way it's supposed to be ....right?

Sally,

A thought-provoking post. Goes sort of deep, I say. AR is pound for pound right up there with the very best of networks of its kind, regardless of its critics. Nobody is perfect, let's keep that in mind and support AR any way we can.

Very beautiful and interesting post, Sally.
My favourite children's  movie is Narnia. I also really enjoyed The Polar Express. Both of those films brought a tear to my eye.  BUT my favourite of all is How the Grinch Stole Christmas !!

I'll have to keep an eye out for Ratatouille (my favourite dish to have at the residence cafeteria when I attended university many moons ago).

I got a call today from Irena Nechaev and we spend at least an hour talking, like we knew each other forever. This was the first time I spoke to Irina in person.  I haven't found another place like this yet.

Faina:  I have done the same....most recently with Brian Block...what a charming young man. So upfront and hey...he laughs at my jokes so he must be okay :)

Life and relationships are a give and take situation....can't all be takers....can't all be givers...there is an in between....a balance if you will for sanities sake as well.

Hello Sally (and all the others that read this) This is an example of a well written, well thought out post. It does come from a popular writer, and it is pointed squarely at general readership to promote a concept. The message I got was one of appreciation, both life in general and the quality of the writers on Active Rain in particular. Appreciation is another of those gifts that come back to you, by sharing thoughts and support with others we tend to grow even more ourselves.

To appreciate others work implies that we have a conceptual understanding of what goes into creating it. I certainly can appreciate the work that went into a simple post like Sally's here because I have put so much of myself into creating articles in the past.

Appreciation reflects the bonding of peers, and the hopes of acceptance of those same peers. The anticipation of appreciation is why we critique our work before pushing that little, ever powerful, SUBMIT button. By critiquing others work we allow ourselves to raise our own bar a notch higher, and Sally has done that with the contest. Points are really inconsequential. It will come down to the judges appreciation of the submitted entries, and because of the process, we shall all be the winners of the endeavour.

I appreciate the wealth and depth of talent here on Active Rain. I appreciate the goals achieved by the standards that have been previously set. I anticipate the bar to continue to move upward, and acknowledge that all the participants will accelerate the quality found here to an even higher level.

Tom: Aw...that was nice. Believe me when I say we all contribute to support....

Mike: Wow, Mike...that was some deep comment going there.  You mean I'm popular?  lol! I call it readership myself although I do have to say it's not all about that....the one thing I found profound is you saying about raising the bar. That is what helped me write better. (go look at my first post :)  In any event it does make for a better content writer to keep on top and it also makes it an unreal network where we all can "bond" like you say (I beg to differ that the male species would call it bonding haha) Points have only mattered when it came to hitting a milestone and I realized...hey...look how far I've come. Competition with blogging or being popular is not on my high list either....  It became "support" that I consider invaluable. I as well as many others have sustained our readership for a long time due to our consideration and support for the next person. That's where it's at...and that's where I will stand...WooHoo! Thank you for the comment that I returned in kind for a very rewarding comment content ...wow!

Quality not Quantity..... and only can we achieve by writing for the community and not for "self" popularity. hey...I kind of like that.

I appreciate your support in the contest as well...it amazes me that your tags read Holiday Balance...another wow.

Speaks to my heart... A Blessing or a Lesson.

I never saw Ratatouille as I have this huge anti-Rat thing going on.  But I do agree that these movies have a message and lesson in them.  I wish more parents would watch them with their children and have the kids write a report with specifics outlined like Favorite Character, Moral of the Story etc.

I love children and they do so much more for me then I can ever do for them.  They teach me lessons in Love, Tolerance, Patience and Friendship amongst so many other things.

You can't please everyone all of the time but does that matter when you do what you know in your heart is right.  I might disagree,  but I am not so dense as to not see the logic in a well thought out decision.

Sally, timing is everything sometimes.  Yesterday I had some minor surgery for melanoma so I have to stay quiet today.  While thinking about the Holiday Balance contest and reading my emails I decided that today I wanted to spend the day giving back, especially on AR.  I have been blessed with so much support from new friends like you and am constantly inspired yet so many times I get consumed about what I want to write that I don't slow down enough to truly give back by spending time to write heartfelt comments and words of support.  This post is such a great, well written expression of the essence of AR and of life...giving.  If we could wake up each day asking ourselves "how can I give today" imagine what a great world we would live in!  Thank you for all that you give to all of us!

Toni: Oh, yeah...big message and taken to heart in my older years :)

Diane:  Thank you for you giving heart today! You too give so much Diane so pat yourself on the back as well....you contribute widely in our community and yes...support is the most important thing every day...not just holidays .....  Thank you Diane...you are appreciated!

Sally, What a wonderful post. Just like you, Roger and I are always renting the kiddie movies. Last week we rented 2! The messages are inspiring. the good guys always win, and there is no filthy language or decadence.

It's a shame that when decent movies come to our town they seem to be the ones with the shortest lived bookings. Well like WC Field says you can never loose money underestimating the taste of the public.

Thanks for raising the bar with this post and your group.

Ginger: We watch a lot of other types but the kiddie ones are usually tops.

Larry: Thanks....this was a fun one to do.
