Success is in the Eye of the Beholder

By

After Active Rain announced that they would not have the moderators (the volunteer members) critiquing our writing anymore, I knew that the new critiquers of our writing would have a different perspective as well. No matter what the "Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder".

I was actually inspired by Bob Stewart's post yesterday morning  Sometimes this place cracks me up, Sometimes it pisses me off  It's all in good blogging etiquette.  In any case, he realized what we go through sometimes and now understands when we are "buying into someone elses kaka" and how we feel.    :)

Yesterday evening my husband and I watched the Disney movie "Ratatouille". The reason my husband and I continuously watch "children's" movies are because they are entertaining as well as ALWAYS have a lesson to be learned. We didn't notice these learning lessons when we were children and now in our older years we sure catch on to to those lessons.

It will be a great joy to watch shows as this with our grandchildren (should we ever be blessed with any) and be able to talk about the lesson at the end of the movie.

Towards the end of the movie, the "Food Critic", and "Ego" was his name (appropriate name don't you think?) did a review of the restaurant and the following are quotes in bold.

After the quote is my relation to the Active Rain staff who are forever trying to please everyone as well as the support from Active Rain members. Sometimes they are appreciated and sometimes not. More often than not, they go through learning lessons too.

  • We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgement. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. Active Rain has pretty level headed people working in front and behind the scenes so be rest assured that what you were given for free would be appreciated for the gifts it is giving you back. Google juice without a doubt and big time exposure to the internet as well as being recognized once in awhile with a shiny gold star or featured on http://www.localism.com/
  • But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talents - new creations. The new needs friends. I was welcomed with open arms from near the beginning of becoming a member. There were less than 19k members (I should have checked....BOB? Can you check for me? I keep wanting to know and keep forgetting to ask) I may not have been a newbie to blogging but I sure learned quickly. How? Giving support to the next person and the next person. Okay, now this place is huge but everyone has a hand in new ones coming aboard while supporting the old ones as well.
  • Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. Just as Active Rain and the undying support of some of our members give. I really value the friendships I have made along the way and believe me...it's those people who make up this Active Rain Community who rock my world and astound me with their writing.
  • In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: Anyone can cook. But I realize only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more. Anyone can blog. Not everyone can become the great all mighty blogger but a great blogger can come from anywhere. We have an astounding amount of writers here. I don't care how long anyone has been in the Real Estate Industry or has been blogging. Botttom line. It will always be quality....not quantity ...that in my eyes are the true artists in life.

The lesson is this (remember I am critiquing this movie as well) as seen in my eyes. Ego is the false self and craves attention and needs more and more and more to fill the center of self where Ego consumes. Funny though, when confronted with a revelation of sorts (the great cook in the story was a rat...yes, a rat) we turn our opinions and negative criticism around and find a positive outlook. Then, and only then does our whole persepective of life, on business and even writing or socializing with our peers on Active Rain change. What a concept. There are learning lessons every day. I AM a success in one more lesson learned.

Giving support can be the biggest gift I can give to someone and it is also a start to ego "finding the real truth at the center of self".

Sally, What a beautifully written post and a nice tribute to the new moderators who are working so had to make and keep Activerain the wonderful place that it is.  I, too, try to help a "newbie" and they are so appreciative it's a wonderful feeling.  We were all newbies and most of the time I feel as if I still am, I am always learning on here.

Sally, I have found in life it is always easy to pick out what is wrong but to make a positive suggestion is what helps not pointing out the negatives. AWESOME POST!  WOOHOO SALLY!!!!

Hello Sally (and all the others that read this) This is an example of a well written, well thought out post. It does come from a popular writer, and it is pointed squarely at general readership to promote a concept. The message I got was one of appreciation, both life in general and the quality of the writers on Active Rain in particular. Appreciation is another of those gifts that come back to you, by sharing thoughts and support with others we tend to grow even more ourselves.

To appreciate others work implies that we have a conceptual understanding of what goes into creating it. I certainly can appreciate the work that went into a simple post like Sally's here because I have put so much of myself into creating articles in the past.

Appreciation reflects the bonding of peers, and the hopes of acceptance of those same peers. The anticipation of appreciation is why we critique our work before pushing that little, ever powerful, SUBMIT button. By critiquing others work we allow ourselves to raise our own bar a notch higher, and Sally has done that with the contest. Points are really inconsequential. It will come down to the judges appreciation of the submitted entries, and because of the process, we shall all be the winners of the endeavour.

I appreciate the wealth and depth of talent here on Active Rain. I appreciate the goals achieved by the standards that have been previously set. I anticipate the bar to continue to move upward, and acknowledge that all the participants will accelerate the quality found here to an even higher level.

Tom: Aw...that was nice. Believe me when I say we all contribute to support....

Mike: Wow, Mike...that was some deep comment going there.  You mean I'm popular?  lol! I call it readership myself although I do have to say it's not all about that....the one thing I found profound is you saying about raising the bar. That is what helped me write better. (go look at my first post :)  In any event it does make for a better content writer to keep on top and it also makes it an unreal network where we all can "bond" like you say (I beg to differ that the male species would call it bonding haha) Points have only mattered when it came to hitting a milestone and I realized...hey...look how far I've come. Competition with blogging or being popular is not on my high list either....  It became "support" that I consider invaluable. I as well as many others have sustained our readership for a long time due to our consideration and support for the next person. That's where it's at...and that's where I will stand...WooHoo! Thank you for the comment that I returned in kind for a very rewarding comment content ...wow!

Quality not Quantity..... and only can we achieve by writing for the community and not for "self" popularity. hey...I kind of like that.

I appreciate your support in the contest as well...it amazes me that your tags read Holiday Balance...another wow.

Speaks to my heart... A Blessing or a Lesson.

I never saw Ratatouille as I have this huge anti-Rat thing going on.  But I do agree that these movies have a message and lesson in them.  I wish more parents would watch them with their children and have the kids write a report with specifics outlined like Favorite Character, Moral of the Story etc.

I love children and they do so much more for me then I can ever do for them.  They teach me lessons in Love, Tolerance, Patience and Friendship amongst so many other things.

You can't please everyone all of the time but does that matter when you do what you know in your heart is right.  I might disagree,  but I am not so dense as to not see the logic in a well thought out decision.

Sally, timing is everything sometimes.  Yesterday I had some minor surgery for melanoma so I have to stay quiet today.  While thinking about the Holiday Balance contest and reading my emails I decided that today I wanted to spend the day giving back, especially on AR.  I have been blessed with so much support from new friends like you and am constantly inspired yet so many times I get consumed about what I want to write that I don't slow down enough to truly give back by spending time to write heartfelt comments and words of support.  This post is such a great, well written expression of the essence of AR and of life...giving.  If we could wake up each day asking ourselves "how can I give today" imagine what a great world we would live in!  Thank you for all that you give to all of us!

Sally, What a wonderful post. Just like you, Roger and I are always renting the kiddie movies. Last week we rented 2! The messages are inspiring. the good guys always win, and there is no filthy language or decadence.

It's a shame that when decent movies come to our town they seem to be the ones with the shortest lived bookings. Well like WC Field says you can never loose money underestimating the taste of the public.

Thanks for raising the bar with this post and your group.
