ICANN just created the way for you to get your own vanity domain suffix.

And it is only going to cost you a mere $185,000.

For just $185,000 you or your business can now buy-

BettyAgent.BettyAgent
Google.google
Ego.Ego
Marlyn.SexyLady
Joe.RealEstate
Bryant.Broker :)

Already there are 22 businesses and/or people who have turned in their applications to purchase their own custom domain real estate. So who do you think is on the list so far?

For SEO purposes we have mostly believed that the .com and the .org suffixes carry the most weight in the SERPS on Google and Bing. Most SEO folks agree and even though there is not really any concrete evidence of this it is the consensus that this is so.

So if that is true, how are these vanity suffixes going to be weighed in the search engines?

It is anyone's guess right about now. We will have to wait to see how it all works out. I believe that at the end of the day the extension and the suffix will play a part in branding and if your keywords are matched correctly to your branding then it will be of a benefit to you.

But I also believe that most people buying these vanity domain extensions are doing it to protect their own brand names they already have like Microsoft and Google and Nike. And I think that some people will buy them just because they can or to stroke their own egos. I doubt that any of them are thinking SEO strategies.

for only $185,000? lol, I think only the big brands can and should get the domain suffix for now especially with that price tag.

Hi Katerina - I am surprised that ICANN has only received 22 applications so far. The news that ICANN was going to allow such domain suffixes has been out for quite a while.

Marc- You would think more people would have lined up. But perhaps even for those who want to have their own suffixes the price tag is still a big too high:)

Eileen- All the big internet companies I think will get them first. Then companies like Nike will on down the line.

That is really taking vanity to the next level... $185,000 is huge chunk of change. Of course, when you're making booku bucks, it's just chump change :)

Gayle- Thanks, I LOVE that photo, thought it was so perfect for the post. Yes, and in some places you could buy several homes for $185,000 which may just be a better investment of your money but then some of the stars shut down entire baby wings at hospitals because they believe that their having a baby is more important than anyone else having a baby:) So who knows who will end up buying these?

Peggy- That chump change can buy some nice real estate:) in many places in this country right now. Of course, some businesses would do well to own their business suffix because of competition trying to take advantage of these types of situations. The law of Parody may come into play yet again. :)

Seriously though, the benefit would be to online branding. Google takes branding into consideration and has patents even pending regarding discovering authorships as well as figuring which brands are connected to which keywords. So google.google would be very branded for 'Google".

Not that I'd pay for this, but beyond the unknown SEO situation, I'd think that the personalized domain could serve as a good memory device for your customers and that you could generate clicks simply from that aspect.
