Bill O'Reilly and Ellen DeGeneres. Fair and Balanced ? Yes !

By
Real Estate Agent with New Home Hunters of Fort Worth and Tarrant County

Sometimes in the course of bringing equality to all Americans, we end up with something called "Strange Bedfellows."

Although that is not to be taken, in this case, literally... Bill O'Reilly of Fox News has ended up... bless his 'lil heart... Bill O'Reilly has ended up defending Ellen DeGeneres.

The Department Store JC Penney, now sometimes calling themselves JCP... has chosen to hire Ellen DeGeneres... daytime host of The Ellen DeGeneres program, and one of the sweetest, most beloved GAY people in the country... as a "corporate spokesperson.

All has been just fine... until over the last few days... another one of those "PAC" groups... One Million Moms... has decided to try their darndest to get JC Penney to fire Ms DeGeneres.  Why ?  Because she is a "lesbian, and lesbians are an affront to traditional family values."

Here it is again, folks.  That "traditional family values" montra being emblazoned on a flag, waived for one and all to see, and then used in an attempt to cement so-called "traditional family values"... a silly euphemism in this case for blatant discrimination and hate.

Personally, for the most part, I view Mr O'Reilly as a stand-up comedian.  Actually... since he stands six-ft five inches tall, he is more of a "sit up" comedian.  He is actually one of the most "fair and balanced" of the troup "over there" at Fox News.

And last night... Bill O'Reilly had a far-right conservative on his show, and debated the "JCP needs to fire Ellen DeGeneres" issue with this bigotted woman.

O'Reilly compared the One Million Mom's attempt at denying Ellen her job as spokesperson for JCP... to the McCarthy hearings in the 1950's that sought to smear anyone who did not agree with Senator Joe McCarthy's ultra-conservative beliefs... as a "Communist..." and additionally sought to have them "blacklisted."

For those of you too old to actually remember this happening in person (I do, I was a young teen-ager, and I remember the horror)... this was a horrible time in Our Nation's History.

So... believe it or not... I say... Bless Your Heart... Bill O'Reilly.

Dawn:  I am so glad to see you back.  So many of the commentors here do that.  It is for many reasons... and yes, fair and balanced is one of them.  Another... is that I have such awesome folks who comment on my posts.

I think a major part of being able to communicate is honestly trying to step into the other's footsteps and see and feel where they are coming from.  I am a Myers-Briggs INFP... (a personality type)... and those of us in that little cubby-hole... more often than not have the ability to do just that.

Dawn... again... thank you for coming back... please come back often, and also... please feel free to comment on not only what I have to say, but on any of the comments that my commentors have made.  And... thanks for your kind words as well.

Just a note:  In some ways... I think it is so cool that this post has NOT been Featured... LOL.  Now, why would I say that ?

Well... cuz we are at 42 comments now, and everyone who has shared in this... is here because they choose to be... and not simply because they found this post on the "Featured Post blog roll."

And... in addition... every single comment that has been made... is sincere, and either well-thought-out, or what I call well-felt-out.

That is so essential to a blog post like this one.  My sincere thanks... and now, my sincere "Woot Woots."  Gee, that still feels so silly to say, but I'm workin' on it.

JCP and Ellen get my vote. I know a few gay couples and they have stayed together longer than most straight couple I know. What does that say about our society? I happen to think Ellen is one of the funniest people out there. I have her first series on DVD and her second short livid series on DVD. My "traditional" family, the dogs and cats included, love the shows. My daughter knew from an early ago about gay couples. I made it very simple for her. It's people loving people.

Hi Karen Anne - I enjoyed your post and particularly applaud your comment at #25.

But then the folks who will discuss their agreements and disagreements in a civil way are probably not the folks who would call a store to demand the firing of a person they have never met.

I am old enough to remember the "kerfuffel" caused by Anita Bryant in the seventies as spokesperson for the Florida Citrus Commission.  Ms Bryant became an rabid anti-gay activist and was fired by the Citrus folks.  It was not a matter of their agreement or disagreement with her cause.  They had hired a singer to represent their product and they did not sign on for the controversial image that evolved around Ms Bryant.

Ellen is talented, popular and funny.  I think her open discussions about her life and relationship gives her a boost in the credibility and honesty categories - not bad for a corporate spokesperson.  Is JCP willing to offend a segment of their customer base - no matter how unreasonable their complaint may be? We will see. I hope that we live in a different time than the seventies (but I applauded when they fired Anita Bryant).

As for the gay marriage question - both sides of the issue get mad at me. I believe the word "marriage" has meaning from centuries of use and I am not real flexible about redefining the language for someone's convenience.  That said, I see no important government interest to be served by denying the legal rights of a same sex couple.  So i favor the concept of a civil union for all couples - straight or gay -  to provide the legal relationship necessary to protect individual property rights and rights of couples who wish to enter into a legal relationship.  Marriage is, in my view, a religious sacrement of the various faiths and should be the exclusive province of the churches. I would take government out of the marriage business.  The concept of the civil union is sufficient for government purposes.

Debbie:  You know, it really IS just that simple.  People loving people.  Barbra Streisand had it right.  I can so easily hear my much-too-soon departed Mom singing "People" by Ms Streisand.

Sure, this is a legal thing, but it is also a very love-filled emotional thing.  Have you ever seen a car pull away from a court-house, or from a church, for that matter... with a sign on the back that read... "Just Civil-Unioned?"

Me neither.  Gay couples and lesbian couples have "traditional families" too.  Some folks seem so scared about "gayness."  It's almost as if they believe that if their children see or hear about gays or lesbians... that they might "catch" it.

Often when you have a "people" who loves another "people"... they want to get married.  So, why not ?  Equal... means... equal.  I have never, ever heard a young couple in love say... "oh Honey, let's get civil-unioned."

Thanks so much for adding your perspective.

It's time for another "by the way:"

By the way... in doing a little bit of research on Ellen, I stumbled upon her very, very first television comedy appearance.  It was a stand-up... again, her very first... on the Johnny Carson show on November 28, 1986.

It is seven minutes long, and Ellen is very, very funny.  And wow, does she look young.  (Which, in the clip, she is.)  She is a young pup of 27 years of age.  Ellen DeGeneres' First Stand-Up Appearance on "The Tonight Show".  Enjoy !

I'm pretty conservative and usually like Fox News- except lately they've been peeving me off a bit with their coverage of the Republican primaries and their dismissal of Ron Paul. But I do have a big problem with so called conservatives who bash a group for being different than themselves. And when they throw in religion for their reasons they must have read a different bible than I did (I'm an atheist and have read the bible). If they are protecting family values then they should look in the mirror. The sanctity of marriage kind of took a hit when the divorce rate passed the 50% mark. I guess it must be nice to have so little to worry about in their lives that this is the biggest cause they can take up.

I have had lesbian clients who were lovely PEOPLE. I'm sure many of the one million moms are lovely PEOPLE, too!  I never thought of my lesbian clients as LESBIANS but as PEOPLE...but after reading all of the above comments I have to say something! :)

To all:

Does it really matter what I think about the issue?  Does it matter what you think about the issue?  No on both counts.

Only one opinion matters--and that's God's opinion.  There are many verses in the Bible that address the issue of sexual sin, but before I quote one for you, let me just say, that JESUS LOVES PEOPLE, but hates sin.  We are ALL cut out of the same cookie dough.  We ALL have sinned and deserve to be punished. (Romans 3:23)  Yours truly included. (Yours truly especially!!)

But, we (or in this case I) cannot say sin is ok.

If my best friend wanted to cheat on her husband, should I say, "Sure...if you found someone better lookin' go fot it!!" ?  No, I would tell her...you cannot SIN against God and against your husband by doing this!  So, I'd speak up!

There are other verses in the Bible if you want to look them up, but here is one for thought.

I Corinthians 6:9-11  "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God?  Do not be deceived.  Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.  And such were some of you.  But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus..."

Sonja:  Wow, would I have something to say about all the things in other parts of the Bible that are viewed as "sinful"... or at least they were 2100 years ago.  But, in the list of things you shared from Corinthians, I find it very, very curious that all of the items mentioned had to do with something that actually HARMED someone else when the act was carried out.

Every one... except homosexuality.  That... simply involves the two people involved.  And, what are those two people doing ?  The simply "love."

You also mentioned that only "God's opinion" counts.  But, how do we really, I mean really know what "God's opinion" is ?  What we have, and what we hear, is other people's "opinion" of what they think "God's opinion" is.

Also... this is in "our" culture.  There are many other cultures throughout the world that actually VALUE those who love others of the same sex.  Some cultures even call it a "gift."

Sonja, I totally and fully respect you, your beliefs, and what you have to say in your comment.  By the way... the list you enumerated from Corinthians... I fully agree with all that you mentioned... except what has come to be called "homosexuality."  What comes to my mind is the phrase... "... and the greatest of these is Love."

Of course "sin" is never ok.  But, the definition of what is a sin, and what is not... well... there's the problem.

I invite anyone who has commented above to jump back in to the dialogue here... and share your thoughts on what we see in comment #49 and comment #50.  Thanks so much.

Karen: Well I am certainly late to the party. Given the statistics that as many as 1 in 9 people are gay or lesbian, that would mean that approximately 90,000 of the children of the Million Moms may be gay. Would that open their hearts?

Karen, somewhere in these comments, you have wriiten about the self doubt and discrimination gays and lesbians have suffered before, during and after they discovered and announced who they really are. The loving God I believe in does not want any of his children to suffer prejudice. I have always believed that people fear what they do not know.

Penney's new ad campaign, pre Ellen is a little bit confusing. All those screaming women, you knew something big was up. It actually drove me into the store and there was no signage to indicate the new pricing policy. The store looks beautiful.  And at least in my suburban Philadelphia mall, I think they could give the competition (Macy's), who is floundering a bit, a run for their money.

Funny, non-threatening Ellen, who is chirpy and very well known,  could be the perfect spokeperson to articulate their new direction. God knows they are screwing it up out of the box.  I am going to the store tomorrow and will try to to see the manager.

Jason, yes... I fully agree with you.  I have known that about Ted for several years, and have told him so.  Sometimes he and I agree, more times we do not, but he presents himself and his views so very, very well.  When you listen to what he has to say, you just know there is much knowledge behind it.

Jason - if that is your plan, you might not get my vote.  But thank you for the kind words.

Karen Anne - I would prefer to think that sometimes we agree and other times we agree to disagree... but neither of us are easy to persuade. But we both enjoy the occasional epiphany.

Karen Anne-wow! Am not generally a fan of the big guy myself, but this is great. Intersting justaposition of views here...at the end of the day, it WILL all be about that great equalizer MONEY. Interesting JCP in their quest for MONEY made the RIGHT decision, supporting gay and gay-friendly-America. not usually how things work out, huh?

Karen Anne, OReilly was right to call the woman out.  To each their own. I don't care.  But you did call her a bigot although in your posts you said you never would.  Maybe that needs to be looked into.

Dale at Home Realty:  I was very "light" on this woman.  What she really was doing... saying that because Ellen did not conform to HER definition of "good family values..." that she should be fired.  What that actually WAS... was a great examply of an attempt to impose her version of "christian Shari'a Law."  Sorry... this is not Iran.  This is not Afghanistan or Pakistan.

One group's personal beliefs should not be codified into law, and then used to control other groups.  I was trying to be "kinder and gentler"... to use President Bush's words... with her.  But, since you wanted me to "look into" whatever it was... I did... and there ya go.

Have a wonderful week.  Watching Tuesday's primary results will be fun... if only to see how badly (hopefully) the Republicans show America that they do not want "Mr christian Shari'a"... former Senator Santorum... to represent them in November.

karen Anne:

Your Words:

"I would never label everyone who is conservative... as being bigoted.  Some are... just as some "progressives" may also be bigoted."

Also your Words:

"And last night... Bill O'Reilly had a far-right conservative on his show, and debated the "JCP needs to fire Ellen DeGeneres" issue with this bigotted woman."

Your lookin into the issue just means you ignore the bovious.  If you agree with something, it is right, if you disagree, it must be wrong.  How about the same with fervor with Rush's statement about the 30 something student being a slut?

Your words:

Dale at Home Realty:  I was very "light" on this woman.  What she really was doing... saying that because Ellen did not conform to HER definition of "good family values..." that she should be fired.  What that actually WAS... was a great examply of an attempt to impose her version of "christian Shari'a Law."  Sorry... this is not Iran.  This is not Afghanistan or Pakistan.

You are right, it isn't Afghanistan or Pakistan, doesn't rush have the right to say what he feels? Or is it just another obvious bias by the left?  The left seems to be holding Rush to their ideals, that he should be held accountable?

I can't believe we are still talking about things like this in America.  I don't care, do what you got to do, but there is no right to take anyone"s money just to give it to somebody you feel may be more deserving.  That holds true for both the left and the right.

Dale:  I said that I woud never label EVERYONE who is conservative... as being bigoted.  And then I said... some are, and some aren't.

And actually, Rush does NOT have the right to say what he feels.  Well, actually, he "could" say it, but if what he says comes under the definition, he could be sued for libel or defamation.  Or... he could end up losing sponsors (six major ones, so far) because of it.  Rush needs to learn that he just cannot "make stuff up" about people... although he does it all the time.

Those like Rush, and like Mr Santorum, are trying to MAKE America into an Iran or into an Afghanistan with their christian version of shari'a.  That... is what I meant.  They are surely free to believe what they want... as are you... but you have NO right to turn that belief into law, and then require everyone to adhere to it.  That... would be christian shari'a law.  Not here, hunnie.  America is not a Theocracy.

Also... what is meant by your phrase... "to ignore the bovious."  What's a bovious ?
