Are your heating bills high?

Here are a few hints to keep warm while keeping your heating costs down

Weather strip your doors and windows to keep the warm air from leaking out.  Someone at your local Home Improvement store can show you how to install the stripping.  Or you can Google "how to install weather stripping" and you'll find plenty of sites to show you how.  It's easy to do and not very expensive.

Keep your thermostat at 68° F.
If this is too cold, try wearing an extra sweater and put extra blankets on the beds.  Remember, you're trying to keep your costs down.

Turn your fans on in reverse mode and on a slow setting.  This will circulate the warm air up there and bounce it off of the ceiling and down into the room.

Let the sun shine in.  Open the blinds and let the sun warm up your home.  Once the sun goes down, though, close the vblinds so the heat stays in.

You may also want to add change your filter. Dirty filters cut down on the heating efficiency of furnace. Less air traveling over the heat exchanger means less heat in the property. Your furnace needs to work harder thereby wasting energy.

HA!  I had that one in there but couldn't find a picture that I liked to go with it so I took it out.  Go figure!   Thanks, Michael.

Very good suggestions. The cost of energy is definitely expensive regarding of what type is used to heat the home. Utilizing these tips will help to cut back on the expense.

I just learned one trick this week.  If you have an all electric, Keep the breaker to the heating elements off unless you need them on.

Nancy,

Yes, they are!  We heat our home with diesel and the price is skyrocketing.  These are all good suggestions to help with the problem.

Nanci, how do you turn your fans on in reverse mode??  I'm new to a cold area and have never had fans.  Both my husband and my daughter like having the fans at night for the noise factor.  I freeze to death.

I'd appreciate the tip!!

Kate -

This only applies to ceiling fans.......

Somewhere right below the fan blades on the neck of the fan and above the light bulbs, there should be a switch.  Not all of them will say which way is normal and which is reverse.

  1. Turn your fan on.  If the air is blowing down on you, it is in normal mode.
  2. Turn your fan off, wait for the blades to stop circling (that's the important part!) and then put the switch opposite of where it is.
  3. Turn your fan back on and the air should now blow up, circulating the warm air and bouncing it off the ceiling, keeping your room warmer.

Good luck.  :-)

Some thermostats let you program times of day you want the house heated, but I've also heard that letting the house get too cold in between heatings actually costs more than leaving the thermostat set at 68 all day. I'll have to do a little more research on this unless you have some info on this.
