My Pink Christmas Wish List - December Challenge

By
Education & Training with GLREA

This time of year I think about Francis Pharcellus Church, editor of the New York Sun who responded to a letter from Virginia O’Hanlon. Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus has become one of the most reprinted editorials in history.

With that in mind, Santa, I have a Christmas Wish List for my new home….

My gingerbread house There are so many things I would like to include but directives on the Dena Stevens - Brad Pitt Pink Challenge dictate 5 features…

The home can be compared to the human body made up of Systems. Each system has several components that make it function optimally. My home would combine the following 5 systems ...

SUSTAINABLE SITE – To minimize my impact on the environment I would like to choose a site for my home that is located near or in a previously developed area. This could be an Edge Development Site or an Infill site. By choosing a site such as these it is likely I will have access to existing public transportation and green spaces. With community resources like these available I will be able to leave my Hybrid Car in the garage and walk, bike or take the bus to run my errands and play with my dog Kodiak  because he doesn't like being stuck in the house! The home would also have a very small footprint -- I don't need a lot of space, just SMART space!kodiak

ENERGY EFFICIENT – Santa, as a nation we are way too dependent on fossil fuels. When we design my home I will need it to have a tight building envelope, strength, good insulation and thermal mass.  My home could be built with products like Durosil or Build Block with fly ash incorporated in the mix to reuse byproducts from the coal industry.

 r value concrete home

We will pay special attention to the way my home is oriented on the Sustainable Site in a way that I will be able to take advantage of the passive solar energy from the sun. The builders will need to pay attention to proper sealing of  my home and will need to include low-e windows with the proper Solar Heat Gain Co-efficient (SHGC) for my location. My home will need to be well-insulated quite possibly using an insulation made from recycled materials like Nu Wool. We will also make use of Energy Star + appliances. Santa, when you build my home with energy efficient features in mind the energy my home requires will be less than the average home.

RENEWABLES – Santa, I would like to live off the grid! The type of renewables we use will depend on the location of my home.  I would  use a combination of solar thermal, photovoltaics and wind energy system. The combination will depend on the site selection as some sites lend better to solar and some lend better to wind.cbs wind generator

In the news today I read the story of the state of emergency in  Oklahoma caused by an ice storm. No matter what area of the country we have all experienced a situation that has crippled our region be it ice, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. The home you are building for me will not rely on public utilities for power. I will be able to provide food, water and shelter for others affected by weather systems because I have a strong home that will withstand the weather and my own little power plant to keep my house powered when public utilities fail.

INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY – Santa, you have built me a home with a very tight envelope so we must pay attention to the air exchange in my home. I will need proper air exchange and combustion venting. This will include sealed combustion appliances, proper exhaust and intake fans, properly sized HVAC. This will make the air that I breathe healthy and clean. This will protect me from radon and mold and as a bonus my energy efficiency will improve even more.

WATER EFFICIENCY – Santa, we are facing a water shortage in many parts of the country and around the world. I would like my home to use less water but also recycle and reuse water. There are several components we could put in place to help achieve this. I would like to start with a live roof that will minimize water run off and also protect my roof from the elements. Other components outside of my home would be prairie grasses and native plants that require very little if any water, a rain capture system and permeable pavement. Inside my home we would implement water savings through low flow faucets and shower heads, dual flush toilets and a gray water recapture system.

There are many components available today that will help my home operate as a lean, mean efficient machine (system!) My wish list has one  requirement Santa....with the great technology today I know there are builders out there (I work with some) that have the know how to put a project together like mine in an affordable manner and follow recycling practices to minimize construction waste. By building affordably I don't have to spend all my money on my humble abode. I will have money left over for philanthropy and to help others realize their dream of efficient, healthy and sustainable living.

Happy reNewable Year to all!

Deborah - you are right. Our houses, our contractors all need to be seen as systems. I think JaneAnne did a post on systems a while back. I will have to look it up and link to it! From the contractors I talk with these systems are much more viable when the process is thought up and front loaded rather than change orders along the way! And yes...we have great minds in this group! I hope more great minds will join and contribute! Thanks for your comments!

Hi JaneAnne - as I developed this post in my head over the past few days I realized that the features of the house comprise many components. Just like our circulatory "system" is composed of the heart, veins, arteries, etc. There are so many important components we need to categorize. Also, some components will cross-breed and enhance other systems! Maybe this is what confuses consumers, they don't look at the home as a system?

My beautiful (racing) daughter and her (racing) friend! They built the gingerbread house together today and I said I had to have a picture for the blog I just posted! Thanks for noticing!

Quite a project for Santa, Mary! I like your ideas and all the detail you included. An infill site is a good idea and positioning your home to get max solar benefit is also key.  Hope Santa brings you joy this year!

Hi Bonnie! The key is in the details and I have been fortunate to learn from people who pay attention to detail. Some will "go green" to "get green." Others will develop packages that work! Those are the types I like to work with! Thanks for your comments on my blog! I, also, hope Santa is good to me AND you! Have a reNEWable Year!

Mary-What a great pink list! I would love to have the live roof! First we would have to find a place that would allow such a roof. That is like the best thing I have seen in a long time. I saw one on TV at the Solar Home Contest in D.C. It was so cool! Katerina

Hi Katerina - check out Live Roof.

Recently they developed a live roof for Metropolitan Hospital in GR, not only is it beautiful but it is very therapeutic for the patients and families.  I was able to get a tour by John through the Live Roof Nursery after I blogged about Metro. What a great process they have. They are very much into research and are developing a live roof for roof's with pitches -- very cool. My camera lost all batteries the day I took the tour so I plan to go back out in the spring and get pictures of their processes again...they are very interesting.

One thing that impressed me is the longevity that is added to your roof because a LIVEROOF protects your roof from the elements PLUS reduces run off PLUS is beautiful  PLUS it keeps your home cooler / warmer. What is not to like? Thanks for your comment!

Hey Mary,  You blew it out of the park.  :)  I like how detailed you post is.  Thanks for all of the links!!!

There is a show on right now about a family that moved in to a 300 year old home and they are doing something cool to get water....gonna go watch it.  I remembered reading about your water shortage section..which I think many people do not think about.

Great job!!

Thanks Stephanie! Your comments mean so much to me! It is not about the components but more the systems, as you often write about!

You'll have to send me the link to the show...I'm certain they will have one! I watched a tear jerker the other night about Build Block on Extreme Home Make Over (ABC)...it seems there are always so many tear jerkers and kudos to the builders/contractors/suppliers that built the home for the family...and a surprise art gallery for disadvantaged kids to show off their work! I loved the show!

Hi Joan,

Yes ... twould be nice (that is an old irish term my grandma and ma use!) and twill happen for many who align with the up and coming builders. These young guys know what they are doing and have done away with the 40/40 rule my friend at the Lumber company talks about...We been doing it for 40 years that way and we'll do it for the next 40...Bah Humbug!!! Let's push the envelope and see ever greater things!

Thanks for the compliments on my baby girl and her friend! You ought see them ride bikes together! Old Ma even gets coaching and tips!!! How cool is that?

Mary, I think we have to re-invent house construction from the foundation up. A wood "box" with a wood roof isn't going to work. Your friend at the lumber yard is going to hate us. we would need or want that much wood. It's hard to limit ourselves to 5 elements. You too have exceeded yor alotment, but that's OK by me.

Hi Bill - LOL! Thanks for the comments! The friends at the lumberyard love us! They have caught on and are adding ICF's, renewables, insulated panels, etc to their product offerings. They are not your normal lumberyard and are staying in the forefront. You're right - it's hard to limit to 5 elements. I choose to think outside the box and make my 5 elements systems! It is difficult to know exactly which components will go into that system before seeing the site and developing a site specific plan! Great comments! Thanks!

Hi Mary, For the most part it's just the same, only being careful of power usage - turn off lights when leaving the room, etc.  This is something that everyone can do now.

So true Georgina! I have been so careful to follow this practice recently! It is the small things that add up! I'm becoming a fan of carpooling these days also! In the "old" days I was always so proud to drive myself -- it's nothing now to meet halfway and let some one else do the driving! A fringe bennie is having someone to talk to on the way!
