Warning...You May Be Using The Wrong Headlines On Your Blogs

By

Ever wonder what the best headlines are for your blogs? How do you come up with great headlines? I was reading some articles on copyblogger in the past couple months and some of what I learned is that headlines should grab the attention of the reader. Done right, the headline is what makes someone click onto your blog from the scroll of the hundreds of blogs available.

Here are some good headline starters for you:

 Warning...

If you are reading this blog, this headline worked!..  Starting a headline with the word warning will catch  the attention of readers so they will click on the blog. Even more important are the words after "warning".. These words are more about the content of the blog and hopefully will grab the reader....

A good example of this type of headline is the headline of this blog...

 How ______ Made Me _______

This one is used to tell a personal story. It is most effective when the two blanks are in contrast. This gets the reader curious about what the blog is about and compels them to read more.

An example is " How a foolish mistake Made Me tons of money"

 Are You _______?

The question headline is also designed to grab the attention of the reader. Hopefully, if done right, the it evokes curiosity or a challenge to the reader. The more bold you are with this one, the better it works.

example: "Are You ashamed of the way your car smells?"

 ______ Ways to _____

This one is more of a  'how to' headline. Most of the time it starts with a number. We all know how great a number blog is. From what I have heard, they are much more likely to get read. The larger the number the better. It impresses the prospective reader with how many tips you’ve got, or at minimum let’s them know exactly what to expect.

example: "101 Ways to Cope With Selling your Home"

So there you have it.. some starter headlines for you. What would you have used as a headline for this blog? One day in the next week, try to use one of these suggestions for you title and see how you  like it..

Happy Blogging!

Coming up with off the wall blog titles sure does get people to click on them. I wrote one a couple weeks ago called "It's a Loan Officer, Not a Serial Killer!" Highest comment rate I've even had.

Sheila- I'm never terribly pleased with my headlines.  I get torn somewhere between SEO and attention grabbing.

A title for your blog post?  Maybe 'Quit writing boring headlines that look like CNN news stories.  Check these out.'  :-D

Love the suggestions.  Headlines are so important indeed.  And I liked yours!

Shelia-The obvious is not so obvious sometimes. I guess it's called a headline for a reason. Gotta give a reason to read, and I must admit, I do not give enough thought to my headlines. Thanks for the reminder.
