International World Water Day 2012
Did you know that today is International World Water Day? Did you know your diet impacts your "water footprint?" For information and links, read this fantastic post...
International World Water Day 2012
Since March of 1993, the United Nations has established March 22 as International World Water Day. International World Water Day focuses attention on the importance of managing and conserving sustainable sources of freshwater.
Each year International World Water Day has focused on a specific aspect of freshwater, and this year the focus is on Water and Food Security. Are you aware of the impact your diet has on water resources?
Water is involved in every step of the food supply chain. From producers to consumers, where we get our food, the type of food we eat, how we prepare it, and how we dispose of food wastage has an effect on our water footprint. Water is the key to food security.
The United Nations has a call to action, asking us collectively to focus on:
“Coping with population growth and ensuring access to nutritious food to everyone call for a series of actions we can all help with:
- follow a healthier, sustainable diet;
- consume less water-intensive products;
- reduce the scandalous food wastage: 30% of the food produced worldwide is never eaten and the water used to produce it is definitively lost!
- produce more food, of better quality, with
less water.”In addition to the official brochure (right) here are some more resources you can access to learn more about International World Water Day and how to support freshwater management:
