The most photographed underwater attraction of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is: Christ of The Abyss

Christ of the Abyss.

Truly a wonder if you have never seen it.
I take clients out there all the time.  It sits in about 25 feet of water and because of the layer of fire coral on it, .it appears to glow!
Perfect for Diving or Snorkeling.
It is modeled after a similar statue in Italy and is the Star attraction in Pennekamp National Underwater Park.
Regardless of your faith, do yourself a favor and add seeing this to your Bucket List!

Do you know the story of who made the sculpture and when it was put there (I assume by wrecked ship)?

Actually, I am proud to say i do.  It  was a gift to our Santucary in the 1960s.

The sculpture was created by Guido Galletti after an idea of Italian diver Duilio Marcante. The statue was was inspired by the death of Dario Gonzatti in 1947. He was the first Italian to use SCUBA gear. It depicts Christ in a pose offering a blessing of peace. His hands and head are raised toward the surface.

Mykael, I too, am interested in how this sculpture found its way to this beautiful location.
