OOOH! The Troubles I Have Seen,,,,

By
Real Estate Agent with Sabinske & Associates, Inc. (Albertville, St. Michael)

Not so long ago, I was working in the REO business.  But, I found that I really couldn’t take it.  I didn’t quit so much as I cut back, which sometimes means you quit to the asset managers.

I had had my fill of left belongings and pets.  The pets really bothered me, kittens, dogs, iguanas (how are they supposed to survive in winter with no electricity meaning no heat?).

So, I took some time off.

Not surprisingly, there were others to take my place and if you lose your place in the pecking order, there is no coming back, I guess.

I am now faced with clients with no money to eat.  Let alone care for pets.  And, so I get out my handy-dandy resource guide, and give them some direction on where to get food.  But resources are limited in Wright County for free to nominally-priced pet food.

I wonder if anyone knows of a program like Sherburne County’s where people can get reasonably-priced pet food.

I don't know of any. I know PAWS in our area is asking for donations. Just dropped a bag of cat food. Takes public support. Good luck with it.

Hey Suzanne if you find reasonably-priced pet food let me know. One would think Dixie is eating prime rib as expensive as her food is!  At one time all the animal shelters in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho NM areas were running over with pets that could no longer be fed.  Sad....

John, I know,   It is really tough for pet owners.  Most of the time we make our own food, but there are many people who barely have the capacity to make their own food.

Hi Suzanne - The sadness of these situations and the amount of innocent suffering can be overwhelming, and it has become a part of our industry that we can't afford to ignore. There are so many dimensions to the problems, and I hope that you find something for the animals.

Hello Suzanne. This breaks my heart. If you set up a Paypal account I will make a donation. Also check with local rescue groups who may be able to help. Finally frequently, the big chain pet stores often discard pet food once the expiration date comes and goes. If someone speaks to the store manager quietly, I'll bet they would help.

Often Food Banks for people also get donations of pet food and if you go to them and qualify you can get some. Get friendly with managers and stock people at local grocery stores. Sometimes they will let you know when stuff is getting tossed.

Suzanne -- I think Leslie(comment 6) has the right idea and I believe that some of the food banks have been given donations of pet food(primarily cat and dog).   It truly is a very sad situation.

Unfortunately, in our county, the food shelves do not distribute pet food as they do in Sherburne and some of the other counties, and that is an issue for quite a few people.  And, those counties only let the residents of their own counties have access to the pet food banks.

Some animal shelters do have assistance for those that need it. Check with the local shelters, and see what Walmart can do for you. Sometimes they have ripped pet food bags in the back they can sell for cheap. Give the manager a sob story and see what happens.

I did a lot of bank owned selling for the last two years. I have some blogs on that. It was emotionally difficult at times. Some asset companies are great to work with and others make you feel like you are two inches tall. They can be very demanding. This year I've scaled way back. Intentionally, but don't tell my broker that.

Working with REO's can be more than challenging and burn out is a common result.

Suzanne- this is so sad.  Have you checked with not only the shelters but your local animal control? Ask your vet as well .  They may know of some organization that will offer assistance.

I think it is an executive decision.  We cannot be at all places at all times.  I too have decided to give up my rental business since it's not as lucrative as it used to be and I have lost my patience with renters unless they are referrals or rentals of $5000 and above.

If a request is put into the food shelves, I  know that they will request some from donators that as what is needed.

There are places here in Sherburne County, but I know that finding pet food in Wright is tough.  Good luck.

Suzanne,

Wow.. Check with the local pet shelters. There is a program here where meals on Wheels ( for seniors/shutins) can also get food for their pets. We have a Katy Christian Miistries that I know collects pet food for their clients. Good luck as these stories always really bother me.

Suzanne, have you thought of partnering with one of your favorite pet businesses with good foot traffic to do pet food drives?  Maybe quarterly?
