There is a new place for healthy products in Olney. Roots Market has opened at 16800 Georgia Avenue, Olney, MD 20832 They can be reached by phone at 301-774-1344.

Finally, long trips down county seeking natural foods will come to an end. The store is similar to Mom's organic market or Trader Joe's with a touch of whole foods tossed in for good measure. The biggest difference may be in their implied statement of purpose....."We have made a conscious choice to support small, organic farms, individual artisians, socially responsible companies and members of the local community." The slogan above one page in their website (http://rootsmkt.com) reads "Supporting your health, Organics, the Environment, Fair Trade, the Animals and the Community." All lofty ideals, but can they pull it off?

My recent trip to the store more than satisfied my needs. The front door is surrounded by fresh vegetables and fruits. I enjoyed the free samples of Pineapple that were strategically placed between me and the rest of the store. They carry dairy and non-dairy products. They carry grain fed beef. They carry chicken and duck. They have fish. (As I walked the aisles, I wondered why I suffer Giant and Safeway)

The Olney store has a wine section. Of course, it is under the same rules as every other wine shop, bar and restaurant in Montgomery County. (For those that don't know it, the County controls all wine that is sold. The county buys from the distributors and the retail folks get to buy from the county. The selection is controlled by a bureacrat.) Roots does dress up the section, so it almost feels like you really have a lot of choices.

I have been adhering to my South Beach diet, and I found that Roots Market has many items that will make the diet bearable. It is a haven of healthy food, good cheese and a friendly staff.

I suggest the anyone living in or around Olney make the short drive and visit our newest market.

I have not heard of anyone waxining poetically about a grocery store in a very long line J-Mac! They should hire you to do their marketing! :)

Very cool, yes you need to eat the good stuff, find organically grown quality produce and food. It is much better for you than the over processed stuff. You will be healthier and live longer. Smart thinking - Lance

John, I may take a run out there this afternoon!  I'm bringing the salad to a neighborhood New Years Eve gathering!

Simon - I must confess, there is a certain delight when one discovers the perfect Brie. It leads to a blog that hopefully will act as internet bread crumbs to their door.

Lance - If we are to win the war on obesity, we must become familiar with the effects of carbohydrates. The increase in diabetes and other problems related to our intake of sugars is impacting our population. Fat children being raised by fat parents being counseled by fat grandparents all sharing the same carb loaded diets will eventually lead to many problems. Eating healthy may increase your life, if nothing else, it will reduce the weight of your casket and keep the amount of space needed to bury you at a 6 foot plot.

Patricia - You will love the store and the ride will be a nice break from your inner city traffic woes. There is a Starbucks two doors down. I hear the gingerbread latte is devine!

I manage to visit Roots whenever I get to Olney.  I also love the bakery in Olney.

I don't get to that area often lately.  But, I love Olney.  One of my favorite communities in Mont. County.

The Only zip code is worth about $20,000 since they opened the latest Metro stop.
