Computer Genius Squatter in AOL building for 2 months until caught.

Eric Simons Computer Genius classconnectEric Simons, a brilliant 20 year old computer genius was hired by Silicon Valley Investors to work on a project Imagine K12 at the AOL Headquarters in Palo Alto, CA. When the project was over, Eric was not done and wanted to continue working to perfect his idea of helping teachers to revolutionize education.

Eric Simons Computer Genius classconnectEric had run out of rent money and noticed a lot of empty space and so he decided to move in. He stored his stuff in 2 lockers outside the gym area and caught a few hours sleep at night but worked on the computer the rest of the time. Eric had realized his badge continued to work so he had free access to the building. He would shower in the gym, wash his clothes at the inside Laundromat and eat snacks from the lunch room.  Everything was going alright until the Office Manager found him in the building one night and he was evicted immediately and they took his badge.

Eric has a new company ClassConnect and has gotten $50,000 in start up money for his company and is looking for a larger investor to fund him. Eric Simons is now living in a rented home and there has been no backlash from AOL. He is still allowed to attend meeting for the Imagine K12 program and goes to the lab afterwards but they did take away his badge so he cannot roam around the building.

Simon’s motto is “Save money whenever possible, use all the resources you can and don’t die. Eric reminds me of some other computer genius’ who had a dream about an apple.

                   Not your typical squatter!

Kristin, this is an interesting story showing where their is a will there is a way. It is amazing AOL did not simply hire him back, give him an office and a staff and let him innovate! Of the course, we all know the answer. He clearly is too much out of the box for AOL's vision!

Hi Raymond,

It is amazing how smart this new generation is. When reading his full story, he was not a very good student until his teacher asked him what she could do to help him. He just bloomed after that and here he is today. I say hooray for his teacher. Someone should give her a raise. So he is currently working on software to help teachers to think out of the box and inspire more kids.

Kristin. You have to love Eric's ingenuity and brilliance! He ran out of money but chose to adapt using his resources, rather than become a burden to society by depending on the state's welfare system and food stamps. Hope to hear more about his Class Connect start up!

Hi Emily,

I thought the exact same thing when I was writing his story. Maybe someday he will own AOL and have the same couch in his executive office on the top floor.

It sounds like there is no hard feelings as they let him in for meetings and office lab work so maybe it has worked out the way it is supposed to.

Hi Nancy,

You are so right, he could have given up and gotten a job at a video store or a coffee shop but he chose to forge ahead and make his company shine.

I think the teachers will praise him for this and I expect we will hear more good things about him.

I am so glad AOL did not have him arrested for trespassing as they could have but chose to be the kinder giant.

Hi Sharon,

I agree, he will probably do extremely well in the future being so driven. It is wonderful that he has found himself and is determined to help others in the education slump.

Hi Rebecca,

I certainly agree with you. I saw a video he did with CNN Money and he said I am 20 years old and I have nothing to lose. But they could have called the police and arrested him but I am glad they did not. Perhaps he will buy them in a few years.
