GIVE ME SOMETHING TO SINK MY TEETH INTO....Comments

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with St.Cloud Homes

There has been a lot of talk on AR about newbies and blogging. Marc Blasi wrote on the number of new members to the Active Rain Community OK Newbies, Time to Get Active....... and something occured to us...the content of comments and the recent LACK of comments.        I will be the first to admit "Good post" does not deserve 25 points. As a matter of fact, I think they should deduct 50 points every time the ONLY comment is "Good post."

Why is commenting so important? First of all as you begin the process of blogging and are sharing content, humour, experiences, advise with our community YOU have made an effort.

Secondly, commenting on a blog you have read provides the writer with a measurable method of determining if the post was read.  If you didn't like...say so. If you did like it...say so and WHY. This will give the writer room to expand on a topic of interest.

Thirdly, if you are new, commenting on a post you have read is a great starting point. If you learned something you did not know before-SAY SO!  Many of the amazing writers we have are sharing their knowledge for free. BRAVO.  We all try and pass along helpful hints. Some small contribution to the community whether it be humourous, anecdotal, statiscal, or opinion is expression.  Since the system was revamped, one of the first things I saw drop off the charts was the comment streams seemed to trickle. One of the things I enjoyed most about Active Rain was the banter. A clever observation, pun, wit, humourous quip and even the off topic remarks all were amusing.  GIVE ME SOMETHING I CAN SINK MY TEETH INTO!  Feedback.

Allison, while perusing the posts on AR I read a lot of posts that are rhetorical.  They are written in such a way as to only be able to garner a short comment and most times no comment.  They have nothing for me to sink my teeth into.  Unlike this post, they are safe or cute or irrelevant.  Fortunately, the guys at AR give us statistics so we don't need a comment to know we are being viewed, read, etc.  And I'm with you on the points issue.  Maybe they can have a minimum word requirement.

Great Post... Bad Comment.

Does that work?  Do I get my points (oh wait, I have already exceeded my daily quota)?  I do agree with your post in that comments are a way of judging whether what you say is impostant to others or even if someone read what you had to say.  (Sounds like you are stealing my idea... from my post).  Are you trying to get 200 Pts for a blog?  J/K... Thanks for building off Marc and my posts.

I agree with you Tony. Even I find it difficult sometimes to find something to say- you enjoyed this post and took the time to respond and for that I applaud you!

LOL!

Thanks for the mention - and I'm with Mark on this one (even though he spells his name the wrong way!) - I nominated you too.

Those quickie comments can be annoying - they're usually from the folks that just cut & paste their posts - just lazy all around.

I'm kind of torn between two ways of thinking when it comes to comments.

When it's my post, I love any comment I can get.  It makes me feel good.  But I'm not the type to comment back with a thank you everytime someone chimes in with a "good post" comment.  Please be assured that I have read your comment and I am very grateful for your response.  No comment back from me is an implied thank you.

When I'm going through other posts, I find all the banter back and forth sometimes a little annoying.  I guess I'm a pretty slow reader and it just takes me more time to get to the meaty comments.  Just imagine if only 10% of the members on active rain would make a "good post" comment and then the poster would respond with a "thank you very much" comment.  That would be 2400 comments to sift through.  I would only be able to read one post per day.  Is that what we really want?

I guess I have a lot to learn about this social networking thing.

Allison...

99.9 % of the time I do in fact leave chewable comments. :)

They may be waaay out there sometimes but at least I took the time to do it.

I would also like to see more reciprocity on the Members behalf.

Many people lose their incentive to comment because no matter how many times they comment no one comments back on their posts.

I think it is time to re-post my reciprocity post. :)

TLW...ROAR!

Hey Tim

"Thank you for your comment" -Lol  But seriously, what we are saying here is what you are saying. Points issue aside, which some have mastered (in the past) for contributing little, is feedback is more than just 2 words "good post". I always "why" was it a good post-what hit the mark. Lately there has been a drastic drop in comments in general (since the points revision) If I read something of interest, often I will go check and see what other blogs the author has written and how they "rated". Hypothetically, If you have been featured a couple of times and yet the majority of your posts have no comments perhaps your posts need more meat, development of thought, more details, more of something!  Writers aspiring to be better writers are always searching for what worked and why. So thanks for chiming in !

TLW-Yum Num chewing on your words...Exactly!  Member reciprocity.  But also what we need to do is encourage everyone to go back into the their pages..and re-read their stuff to see where they missed the mark. If it didn't generate a response, was it boring? Not informative? Lacking substance? Trivial?  Thank you for the encouragement you have always inspired within the community....

Allison...

Oh, we definitely need re-read what we have written :)

Sometimes there is absolutely nothing wrong with a post. That's where commenting just for points come into play. Going the extra mile when commenting on other's Blogger's Blog Posts sure helps keep things rolling along. :)

O.K., so you got me again!  I'm often disappointed with the number of views our posts get verses the number of comments.  How will we ever get good enough to make it to the  darn Dashboard if nobody offers their feedback?  We feel so fortunate to have found this community of Professionals and we not only want to share our own experiences with them but we value their opinions as well.  Yeah, this is another "Great Post" and now you know why! :)

Lisa you raise an interesting point..How will we ever get good enough? I wonder if good mean telling the same old sex story we have heard..or rehashing the MLS news update, or being completely outrageous. Views vs comments. They are reading us..that is a good thing.  They are responding...a better thing. While the dashboard is nice, and it has some really good content on it, Bloggers blog for the freedom of expression it affords us. At least I do. I don;t thnk about the points, or how to manipulate or produce a boatload of junk ..at least I try not to, a barge on occasion..but not a boatload... lest I digress. Thank you for your comment- keep reading, responding and BLOGGING- I expect to see some good stuff from you!

Allison,

Thanks for the post. As a newbie, I can relate to need to create posts and to acknowledge the creations of others, here in on AR. There you have it! Let's go forward and post!

Allison, many times I read and run, not your bligs inparticular. Especially with blogs that have a lot of comments. After reading a few of the comments I usually find that someone else has already expressed my thoughts, so its on to the next topic. However, I guess we can still rate and run, right? What say ye?

Hi Allison.. for a second there, I thought you got a new grill, or gold teeth! :))

I think there is a whole psychology behind commenting. Not that its intentional, but its there. "What do I say?", "Will I look silly saying this", "Am I repeating something someone already said", etc.. or the not so innocent spamming (which I am guilty of, but I hand out credits to spam me back).. "I wrote a similar post about this", etc..  :)) >not a plug<

Once you get past 'great post' and similar comments, then hopefullly folks will contribute more of themselves. I even find myself at a loss of words, and dont comment and return for something a little better 'to sink your teeth into' later. but Bryant makes a good comment above.."BUT I also don't mind if someone is just a knowledging that they have stop by and read. "   I'm glad to see that.

how about the comments that show that the person hasn't even read your post! uhmm.. what where we talking about?! ;)

oh yeah.. at least leave a comment.. we all can admit that we like to see comments on our posts.. right? real estate appraiser

You're right Nick

Good posts deserve good comments. Good comments deserve good thought. Thank you for reading and responding...no I do not have a "new grille"  But I do know how you get your attention! <grinnnn>

As a newbie I am not sure if you even get credit, but as suggested if you would lose 50 points for a lame response, what should the penalty be for commenting on your own post?

Just a thought, but thanks for the 50 anyway.
