Discover Maryland: Vintage Charm ~ 25 Cents/Gallon

Pocomoke City, MD

 Pocomoke City, MD

We spotted this vintage gas station in Pocomoke City, MD, a sleepy little town on the Pocomoke River in Worcester County, on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Pocomoke City is less than an hour from Ocean City, MD. It's been dubbed "the friendliest town on the Eastern Shore" and certainly worth a visit while vacationing there. The vintage gas station is next to the Delmarva Discovery Center which features exhibits about its heritage and history as well as wildlife in the area. Pocomoke City is also home to the historic MarVa Theater. Other attractions include the scenic Pocomoke River, 1/2 mile River Boardwalk, Cypress Park and Sturgis One Room School Museum.

Andrea, wow...those were the days...in fact I remember 89 cents/gallon as late as 1991! At least memories are captured in photos.

Hi Andrea,

I remember when I first starting driving in 1969, gas was selling for 25 cents per gallon. We would all pitch in a quarter and fill up my tank. Those were the days! Great photos!

Hi Praful, I believe my earliest memories are about $1/gallon, too. Pocomoke City did a fantastic job restoring these and preserving it for the next generation.

Hi Kristin, thank you! It's hard to fathom nowadays .. $1 to fill up your tank!!

Great photo, Andrea.  When I left for college, gas in Winchester had risen to $1.25.  You would have thought the world was coming to an end.  It was $.89 in Tulsa.  I loved it.  I still rode my motorcycle a lot of the time.  I only filled up every couple weeks for about $5.  That will barely run my mower now.  8-(

Hi Drea, I love these old reminders of times gome by. There was something so charming about them. Remember the service when the attendent would wash your windows and check the oil. They even had hoses to check the air in tires. Whatever happened to those days-gone forever sadly.

Hi Mike, prices now are just insane. But compared to what they pay in Europe, we are still pretty good! I believe my family pays b/w $1.50 - $2 per liter, not gallon!

Hi Mona, yes they are! We took a detour to Pocomoke City on our way home yesterday. We are all having a great time and I do enjoy having them around so much ... time just goes by way too fast of course.

Hi Brenda, I know! Can you imagine??! They did such an awesome job with it Brenda, all red and shiny - it looked brand-new.

Hi William, I recall driving some back roads in New England and coming across this little gas station .. just like you described! It was wonderful and I do wish we could see more of that again.

Thank you Louise! Pocomoke City is a sleepy little town but the Discovery Center and vintage gas station where worth the trip for us! Where can you still find something like that, and so fabulously restored?!
