Tax-Free Shopping in Texas: August 17-19, 2012.
Save the dates! With the start of the school year right around the corner, it's almost time for the annual sales tax holiday in Texas. This has been an annual event since 1999.
Most clothing and footwear priced under $100 is exempt from sales tax. The Texas sales tax rate is 6.25% and local sales taxes can add up to another 2% in some areas. On average, Texas shoppers will save about $8 for every $100 spent.
A list of exempt and non-exempt items can be found on the State of Texas website.
In addition to clothing and footwear, most school supplies priced at less than $100 can also be purchased without paying sales tax, including backpacks under $100 for elementary and secondary school students.
State Comptroller Combs predicts shoppers will save $62.1 million in sales taxes during the Friday, Saturday and Sunday tax break. I plan to be one of the savers!
