Capitol One ExpansionCapital One, the 5th largest bank and largest online bank in America, calls Tysons Corner home. The corporate headquarters is an amazing innovative complex located on 26.2 acres. Capitol One employs over 28,000 people worldwide and is known for their altruistic endeavors.

Pending approval, they have dedicated approximately three acres for the Tysons-McLean Transit Station and Capital Beltway improvements. After acquisition of two other banks, Capitol One has moved additional staff to the main headquarters, which has now reached its full capacity. In view of continued growth in the Tysons Corner, McLean, Vienna area, they created a master plan for expansion which is already underway.

After exhaustive planning and development efforts during the past five years, a proposed Master Plan has been created to be carried out in a series of five phases. The goal is to create a vibrant, almost utopian, pedestrian-friendly, green, urban environment to coordinate with a number of transportation options that allow workers to be less reliant on their automobiles. The future complex design will include urban parks, office buildings, residential spaces and a hotel center, as well as retail space and parking.

Two million square feet of office space is included in the plan, along with 1.3 million square feet of residential space. There will be between 984 and 1,297 apartments and condominiums available with approximately 20% of the residential units to provide adequate housing for the projected workforce. With this plan, the number of Tysons Corner residents is estimated to increase sharply, and the focus will be on development of office space to encourage the use of public transit.

Approximately 86,000 square feet at the ground floor level will be carefully planned to host retail and restaurant space at key locations within walking distance of the residential units. Parking areas will be aesthetically designed above and below grade, but more limited to coincide with the new transportation plans and metro line. Nearly 5 acres of public parks, plazas and green space will be included to equal at least 35% open space in the complex.

Along with new office buildings and accommodations for conferences and corporate activities, Capitol One will continue its commitment to the environment in every phase of operations. Vegetated roof spaces on specific buildings, interior block courtyards, innovative storm water management techniques, low impact development techniques and designs to reduce runoff will all be incorporated along with plans to use existing natural resources. The future of Tysons Corner is more exciting than ever!
