Local Firefighters go the Extra Mile, Goshen Fire Company, Station 56

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with RE/MAX Preferred RS152252A

West Goshen experienced a tragic fire this week on Gail Road which killed an elderly couple in the early morning of 8/10/12.  Several of our area fire companies and medics responded to the blaze.

3 young men from Station 56 of the Goshen Fire Company went the extra mile today by visiting neighbors on Gail Road and talking to them about smoke alarms.  Offering to test the smoke alarms, the 3 men realized that some of the alarms either didn't have batteries or the batteries were dead.  The firefighters then used their own money and replaced batteries for those that needed it.

The firefighters, Ryan Herman, Steve Hiro and Dusty Kilgore, all from Station 56 are just 3 of the many volunteers that put themselves in harm's way to keep our neighborhoods safe from fire.  The mission station of the Goshen Fire Company says it all:

Neighbors Helping Neighobrs

We, the members of the Goshen Fire Company, are dedicated to the preservation of life, property and the environment.

As a volunteer and career department, our goal is to provide exceptional fire, rescue, fire police, and emergency medical service to the community through the recuritment and training of qualified individuals, providing them with the tools they need to perform any task.

Thank you to all of the fire companies that responded to this fire. Thank you for always being so willing to step up and be heroes to our community.  Special thanks to Ryan, Steve and Dusty for going the extra mile today.

Jared, the firefighters were young men too, which made it even more impressive.  One is as old as my older boy!

Thank you Michael.I hope not.  The fire was believed to have started from an overloaded extension cord.  Very sad.

How tragic for the couple Susan, so sad to hear. But great efforts on the firefighters part to help others with the smoke detectors which are essential for safety.

It still amazes me that smoke detectors are on television constantly.  Commercials, tragic fires in other parts of the country and world and still people do not think they apply to themselves.

Very sad to hear about the elderly couple who perished in the fire.  Many times, awareness arises from tragedy -- and it sounds like nonfunctioning smoke detectors were discovered as a result of this terrible loss.  Kudos to the Goshen Fire Company for their loyalty and unselfish bravery!

What can we do for you today?

Heat and fires are dangerous please becareful this time of year so many can be hurt with one mistake of not thinking the heat through and going out without plenty of water or leaving a young child in the car when you go in to get something please think before you act take that next step and remember fires and heat kill . Have a blessed day talk to you soon

Gary, it's a sad story.  We are lucky to have such great fire companies here.

Chris and Dick, my house has smoke detectors but I can't hear them.  Every week or so I tell myself I will look up something that will help me know if my smoke detectors go off and I never get around to it.  I imagine this is true for batteries for some people.

Jason, same here.  It's a tragic event but I am so proud of the young men in Station 56.

Hannah, we just had the Goshen Country Fair here, first week in August to benefit the Goshen Fire Company.  I was glad to see the huge turnout of support.

Nan, we can't thank them enough.

Carie, I'm not sure if non-functioning detectors were at fault but there's no denying the selfless act of the firefighters.

Laura, leaving animals in a car is also very dangerous.

As you know, firefighters and medics are near and dear to me.  I applaud you for this lovely shout out and them for their efforts of the heels of such a tragic fire.  Every year I post about changing batteries in smoke alarms when time changes.  But perhaps this year I will do more.

I haven't met a fire fighter yet that wouldn't go out of their way to help someone.  These three young men just prove it again.
