Healdsburg has been home to a burst of home touring activity this summer as Sunset has featured a Blu Home in town as their 2012 Idea House. It's great to have the attention on the town and a very green home that offers an alternative to both stick building and traditional modular construction. I have been impressed with the quality of the construction and materials. This isn't your father's modular or your grandfather's double wide. This is a state of the art, energy efficient home with precision construction that you can only get by building in a factory under controlled conditions. What makes it appealing in today's world besides the obvious benefits of green building is the speed of construction. It's possible to build much more quickly than if you have to do everything on site.
On the other hand, this isn't a panacea. You still need roads, power, water, septic or sewer, and an excellent foundation. In earthquake country, that means plenty of engineering and an abundance of concrete.
