After over a year of construction work, Princeton Elementary reopened for the new school year with a flourish that could only be brought upon by a much-needed $19.4 million infusion of new buildings, resources, and renovations.

A fixture in the College Park community since its founding in 1926, Princeton Elementary has distinguished itself as a pre-K through 5th grade school with facilities for the visually impaired. It has also maintained a high academic achievement record, a recent example demonstrated by last year’s third graders having the district’s highest FCAT reading scores.

Now, with the renovations completed, Princeton Elementary looks to continue the trend it has set for itself well into the future, with a new physical fitness pavilion, science and art facilities, and a media center.

The cost of the renovations was funded through a combination of the penny tax and Orange County Public Schools. They included ensuring that the school meets Green Globes green building standards. They achieved this through a combination of natural lighting, new water-saving toilets and faucets, and the use of the original building. Both the gardens and the courtyard have also been extended.

Community members should be aware that commuter traffic around the school has been changed slightly, with new regulations stipulating that Princeton Road is no longer a pick up or drop off area, and no parking is allowed on Elizabeth Street.

We’re excited to see the renovations come off without a hitch and that Princeton Elementary will continue to enrich the lives of students in the area. It’s just one more thing for all us College Park residents to be proud of!
