Labor DayAs an American federal holiday celebrating the economic and social contributions of American workers, there is no better time to get personal, commemorate historical events or hold fund drives. In addition to traditional family picnics, many people attended Labor Day celebrations in the Tysons Corner area.

The firefighters and rescue workers of FairfaxCounty held their annual four-day "Fill the Boot" fund drive to raise money for area children with muscular dystrophy. Funds were raised through charity auctions as well as at various intersections by county emergency workers asking drivers to donate by putting money into a boot. The money will provide medical care and other types of support for area children with Muscular Dystrophy, as well as to fund a summer camp in Maryland. Subway provided delicious sandwiches for the fundraisers, and SunTrust Bank employees counted the money.

On a more historic note, commemorative events were held for this past holiday weekend to mark 150 years of Civil War history in Fairfax County. These events took place on the 500 acres near where U.S. 50 and Interstate 66 intersect. It is hard to believe that approximately 1500 soldiers were either wounded or killed so close to Tysons Corner  during the Battle of Chantilly on September 1st in 1862 (also referred to as "Ox Hill" by Confederates).

The Battle of Chantilly was staged at the Ox Hill Battlefield Park, and along with the speeches of local officials, there was a presentation of 16 state flags. The Federal City Brass band played music from that time period, followed by the firing of rifles and cannons by historic re-enactors. There were additional speeches and the ceremonial laying of wreaths along with costumed Civil War re-enactors creating the atmosphere of a battle camp. Some were seen on horseback, others at their campsites. Souvenir crafts were also available for the children. At the cemetery of St. Mary of Sorrows Catholic Church, a candlelight memorial service was held for those soldiers killed during the Second Battle of Bull Run.

The many events that were planned help us not only to remember the wounded and fallen soldiers, but also to help us realize our rich history and understand the role this area played in the building of our nation. The events of this past weekend were a great way to end the summer and ease into fall.
