the "Real Realtor" PLYMOUTH MORATORIUM ON WIND TURBINES?

Plymouth MA Wind Turbine

For the past two years Plymouth MA and many other Massachusetts towns have been struggling with trying to "get green" and be responsible to public need and rights.  Wind turbines have sprouted up in Plymouth County and on Cape Cod with many issues and complaints coming from local residents living near these devices.  In fact most towns agree that wind turbines have a place but towns must review regulations, safety and health concerns.  This has come at odds to some people who have obtained licenses to construct and now towns are seeing problems that must be addressed if more are to be put into operation in future.

With this in mind, Plymouth, MA Town Meeting is considering a moratorium so the town can study and review the appropriate ways to license wind turbine installations while protecting the residents and environment.

Two sides to every story. Some people view wind turbines as beautiful and some as ugly, noisey, nuisances. I'm not sure where I would stand if they were introduced where I live on Marco Island. I feel that they are a step in the right direction as far as energy conservation but wish they could be the old fashioned and charming style of windmill that you see in Holland.

We have several counties in our area that have restricted property owners from being able to construct a wind turbine on their property regardless of how much land they own. Curious to know how this turns out in your area

Hi John-In Central Washington, about 100 miles east of Seattle, we are seeing wind-farms sprouting up on hill sides and in what I guess would be wind funnel areas. The largest project being the Vantage Wind Project.

From California.... Wind generators and solar generators are popping up all over, So far, I'm not seeing any that would adversely effect our major natural attractions such as Yosemite, although our deserts have huge wind farms and many consider them tourist attractions. Don't know that there will ever be peace between the environmentalists and those in industry.

Thank you for the comments.  Lenn, yes it's taken about a year to focus the town on the issues but looks like it's working.

Susan, Brian and Adrian - they are sprouting up here in NE and the Cape similar to you I suspect.  I thnk they have a home here if in the right location.  Just need to make certain height is monitored and distance from residential homes is safe.

Brad - there will always be pros and cons and those on each side.  Not sure we can move into this century without some other forms of sustainable energy.  But I welcome the discussions.

Dedicated. Qualified. Local.

Haven't seen too many wind turbines in Colorado.  It is a good idea though, for clean energy.

Hi John, I will be curious to know the outcome of this.  I live by the coast and it is windy most of the time.  I have often wondered why no one has done it here yet. Personally I wouldn't mind.  Thank you for sharing.

Great post, and yes this is an ever growing concern - people now wonder where zoning will permit them as many never anticipated that they would be close to residential developments in our area.

As a follow up the Plymouth Board of Selectmen have voted not to include an article on Wind Turbines to be put on the next Town meeting roster but to force any and all complaints through the town Planning Board where the Selectment feel they have the charter and skills to do the job of hearing and approving construction and not to put it in front of the people of the town.

My first reaction is one of surprise and concern that they (Selectmen) don't see this as a bigger issue that may need a wider play in town.
