Why am I so Krabby in Naples Florida

By

Have you ever bought a pair of designer sunglasses at a flea market or on the streets of New York from a street vendor and you knew they were not real because you paid $10 and the sign said “Similar to Gucci”?  Thats not why I am so Krabby in Naples Florida.

None of us like being taken advantage of and when buying a knock off no one is taking advantage of us because we know exactly what we are purchasing.

We have been told that some fish mongers are selling to restaurants inexpensive pieces of fish at expensive prices saying they are something they are not.  Thats illegal and fraud.  We all suffer when we are deceived.

So, have you ever gone to a restaurant and ordered the Crab sandwich or Crab salad expecting Crab and it was not?  Not spelled Krab or not advertised as seafood salad but advertised as Crab and then when it looks and tastes funny you ask.  “Is this real Crab?”  No it’s surimi ( fish-based food product that has been pulverized to a thick paste ).  This is

why I am so Krabby in Naples Florida. Why am I served fake Crab in a seafood restaurant and not told ahead of time that it is not Crab?  Better yet, in Naples Florida why do they not serve

CRAB?

Good question.  Happened to us yesterday in a restaurant here in Naples on the water that we have been frequenting for 12 years.  The Dock at Crayton Cove.  In the past 12 years we have seen the quality of the food at The Dock at Crayton Cove decline yet the prices continue to go up.  The owner seems to think that gouging the tourists or the snowbirds is his way to an early retirement, apparently.  I might also add that in the vast majority of Naples restaurants the staff is really terrific most likely being trained for a resort market.  Not at either of his 2 restaurants, hummmmm.

When we were at The Dock yesterday it was pretty much empty.  Maybe 6 tables at the height of lunch.  One can only hope that the owners plan of cutting back and serving something other than what is on the menu has finally hit home with most of his regulars.

Why does this upset me?  It’s misrepresenting and it’s not right.  Makes me wonder if my husbands pastrami sandwich was real pastrami or deli.  Don’t know but it really looked suspiciously like deli.  When you serve something other than what is stated on the menu you run the very high risk of someone having an allergic reaction to what you put on their plate.

We are forever asked by customers about dining here in Naples.  For years we recommended The Dock at Crayton Cove and it’s sister restaurant Riverwalk (thats another story but not a good experience for the people we were with).  Never again.  In fact we will tell everyone about this and we will announce it at our office meeting and our board meeting and of course to all of you nice people in cyberspace.  We believe this is fraud and thats why I am so Krabby in Naples Florida.

If it’s ok to sell surimi as Crab and not call it Krab, then do you really know whats in your favorite hamburger?

Just asking.......

Wow!  We all love referrals.  This business owner needs to send you some roses and make things better - if possible.

Thank you.  i don't need roses I would like him to either take it off the menu or change to Crab.

Hi Chris and Dick - I'd be upset too. It's always sad when a favorite starts down that road, because they seldom make it back. It sounds like time to look for a new place to eat - fortunately, the restaurant business is always generating something new and interesting.

Chris, That sounds a lot like cheating and they shouldn't be doing it. I have been told by restaurants in the Destin area that they mostly import their fish from China where it's less expensive. Now that is a bummer for thinking you are getting fresh seafood from the Gulf.

Debbie, years ago Dick and I were in Hawaii and looking forward to some fresh local fish.  We were told that the Hawaiian Islands had been fished out years before and all the fish came by plane from New Zealand every morning.  I just go crazy when someone says CRAB and it's KRAB.  Maybe I'm a little quirky but I also go bezerk when they say butter and it is NOT.
