Carroll County, Maryland Haunted Places ~ Crybaby Bridge

Carroll County, Maryland Haunted Places

Carroll County, Maryland Haunted Places ~ Crybaby Bridge The last several days have been rainy here in Carroll County, MD. That’s an understatement really, we have had torrential downpours followed by teasing peeks of sun and more and more rain. I’m not sure why I thought today would be beautiful and I’d take some fall community photos to go with my upcoming market reports. Looking out my window, nothing but big rain clouds and dark grey ominous skies. No new photos today! That’s ok, I have plenty to do.

During my first appointment this morning the conversation turned to Carroll County, MD Haunted Places. I don’t think I’d ever given it much thought. Haunted places? In Carroll County? Gettysburg, PA sure, Bath, Maine sure, we’ve been on ghost walks or haunted tours in both places. Carroll County is Home Sweet Home, I guess I just never gave it a thought until today when Carroll Magazine, Oct/Nov 2012 issue was mentioned. Haunted Places of Carroll County article by Scott Braden mentions a two haunted hot spots in Carroll County, MD Crybaby Bridge and Ghost Mill Roads.

Crybaby Bridge is located on Adams Mill Road just off of Roops Mill Road in Westminster.  If you drive out to take a look be careful, depending on your route the back gravel roads are narrow, winding and wooded creating the perfect backdrop for such a hair raising tale.

According to local legends a baby or many babies were tossed off the bridge for a number of reasons. Some say a girl became pregnant and was afraid to tell her parents, others say it was due to racial issues attached to slave owners and or hate crimes.

I visited Crybaby Bridge today, it was a beautiful ride on some back country roads I have driven past many times. Rolling hills, sprawling farms, cows, homes large and small along my route. When I arrived at Crybaby Bridge I was a little disappointed, it was a concrete bridge. I wish I had learned about this place before the old wooden bridge was replaced. No big deal I thought. I drove the length of the road just to be sure I had the right place and turned around so I could stop and take a few pictures on this dreary day of Crybaby Bridge.

The location is rural and remote, not a frequently traveled road in the midday hours. It crossed my mind that if Hubby knew where I was he may not be very happy with me. I parked the truck, walked a few steps closer and took a few pictures. I was about 12 feet from the truck when I heard a clang sound,  metal on metal of some sort, gave me the creeps! I’m sure it was something harmless I just don’t know what.

It was fun tracking down this local legend and seeing it for myself. Do you have a local legend in your town? I'd love to hear about it, it's a great time of year to share stories.

If you are looking for a home in Carroll County, MD we can track that down together! Call/text or email right now and we can get started.

Hi Diane, I suspect if you dig around a little you would probably found a few more ghost stories in and around Westminster. The Crybaby Bridge is a sad, sad story though .. breaks my heart just thinking about it.

I went on a Ghost Tour at Historic Savage Mill last year. It was not only super interesting but creepy a couple of times, too. There was just something off about a couple of the rooms, it felt different .. weird.

I went to Cry Baby Bridge last night around 9 pm with my 13 year old son and 19 year old step son

we did not hear any sounds our of the ordinary.  We even went under the bridge and stayed there for about 45 minutes and still did not hear or see anything.

If the story was true i can't imagine the horror they went through.

However today or last night, i could not see or hear anything our of the ordinary.

i guess you can make anything hear like anything if you really want too.

Hair Treatment ~ Thanks! I sincerely appreciate your comment!

Alan from Littlestown ~ Wow! That sounds like a cool adventure! I was not brave enough to go under the bridge. I agree, you can make anything you hear sound creepy if you want to or allow it. I was alone when I went. It would have been much more fun to my the kids along. If the story was true, like you, I can't imagine the horror the girls and babies experienced.

When I looked into the Crybaby Bridge story I found there were similar stories in different locations across the country. My theory, it happened once, maybe a few times and the story got carried & retold in different places.

Thank you for your comment Alan, I sincerely appreciate it!

I went to this bridge at about 7:30 on a Thursday night. Driving up to the woods felt like someone was watching me from the trees. The abandoned gravesite leading to the final road was erie and spooky and finally the bridge. That bridge was so quiet I swear you could hear anything, even a pinneedle. I parked my car on the bridge and turned my lights out. I didn't hear anything then drove to the side and rolled all my windows down and shut the car off and anxiously waited to hear or experience anything. Well something DID! Quietly and piercingly threw the night I heard a quiet voice say "wanna come play?" This terrified me as this was my first ghost I've ever spoken to and I got the hell away and fast. My friends refused to go back out there but I still want to investigate for more information. Something really struck me as weird though and that's the house right before the creepy bridge. I mean seriously who the hell lives next to a haunted bridge. Seems related possibly a guardian to the forgotten spirits or maybe a satanic house that feeds of the murdered innocence. Just a theory why, but I am telling you 100% that ghosts do reside at that scary ass bridge.

The picture you posted wasn't even the bridge. You had to turn right then go down a little more and there's a small bridge that comes up on your right. That's cry baby

This bridge that is at the top of this in the photo is the first bridge now if you make a right turn off this bridge and follow the road down a little ways and make the very next right than you will find crybaby bridge. 6 of us where ghost hunting last night there between 10-11:30pm and some of the things that we had captured on camera and ignored video will leave people puzzle. We have seen a baby angel manifest on camera the Devil Himself many orbs....red, orange, and blue. There where many manifesting entities that showed up in a pictures and one video. We split up in groups of three on each side of the bridge and took pictures across at each other and although we could see each other with our own eyes the infrared camera showed no one standing but yet our trucks showed up behind us in every picture with out us. We caught the devil on the infrared video camera. At that point in time we cut it short and got out of there. We had went back to the motel and watched the video and after we saw the devil it cut seen to the grave yard with us there and forced the camera to a tree at the base and went up the tree than stopped. We where at the bridge the whole time but yet the video also said we where in the grave yard as well. Although we where in one place almost as if we had been back in fourth in to locations at one time. One of the photos that was taken showed a baby angel that we had saw that night as well. My wife Dena, her sister Barbara, and her fiance Joshua plus I accompanied the paranormal group The Ladies of the night from Pennsylvania and his investigation last night. Had to believe even for my self but as soon and the images in videos are analyzed professional analyzer you shall see what we saw. To be honest with everyone my wife and family members/I plan to never to visit again for safety reasons. But for the professionals that deal with these kind of situations I encourage you guys to check it out for yourself.

After some reviewing so far after hear from the paranormal investigators... It's was not the devil but yet it was the Ku Klux Klan operations and that night several babies were released through prayer I think I have a brother that's a good as well. Much more is under review and being analyzed will be updated when it's done.
