Carroll County, Maryland Haunted Places ~ Crybaby Bridge
Carroll County, Maryland Haunted Places ~ Crybaby Bridge The last several days have been rainy here in Carroll County, MD. That’s an understatement really, we have had torrential downpours followed by teasing peeks of sun and more and more rain. I’m not sure why I thought today would be beautiful and I’d take some fall community photos to go with my upcoming market reports. Looking out my window, nothing but big rain clouds and dark grey ominous skies. No new photos today! That’s ok, I have plenty to do.
During my first appointment this morning the conversation turned to Carroll County, MD Haunted Places. I don’t think I’d ever given it much thought. Haunted places? In Carroll County? Gettysburg, PA sure, Bath, Maine sure, we’ve been on ghost walks or haunted tours in both places. Carroll County is Home Sweet Home, I guess I just never gave it a thought until today when Carroll Magazine, Oct/Nov 2012 issue was mentioned. Haunted Places of Carroll County article by Scott Braden mentions a two haunted hot spots in Carroll County, MD Crybaby Bridge and Ghost Mill Roads.
Crybaby Bridge is located on Adams Mill Road just off of Roops Mill Road in Westminster. If you drive out to take a look be careful, depending on your route the back gravel roads are narrow, winding and wooded creating the perfect backdrop for such a hair raising tale.
According to local legends a baby or many babies were tossed off the bridge for a number of reasons. Some say a girl became pregnant and was afraid to tell her parents, others say it was due to racial issues attached to slave owners and or hate crimes.
I visited Crybaby Bridge today, it was a beautiful ride on some back country roads I have driven past many times. Rolling hills, sprawling farms, cows, homes large and small along my route. When I arrived at Crybaby Bridge I was a little disappointed, it was a concrete bridge. I wish I had learned about this place before the old wooden bridge was replaced. No big deal I thought. I drove the length of the road just to be sure I had the right place and turned around so I could stop and take a few pictures on this dreary day of Crybaby Bridge.
The location is rural and remote, not a frequently traveled road in the midday hours. It crossed my mind that if Hubby knew where I was he may not be very happy with me. I parked the truck, walked a few steps closer and took a few pictures. I was about 12 feet from the truck when I heard a clang sound, metal on metal of some sort, gave me the creeps! I’m sure it was something harmless I just don’t know what.
It was fun tracking down this local legend and seeing it for myself. Do you have a local legend in your town? I'd love to hear about it, it's a great time of year to share stories.
