How do I Find a Specialty Painter / Finisher - Part V - Preferred Vendor

What can you do to ensure a painter or decorative type designer has the skill set that will enable them to visualize and execute what you need & want to have painted or finished?
AZ Paint Contractor - Marbeling

Let’s talk about common sense and address what you really need in a painter/designer.  Any painter can have general liability, workman's compensation and a current license but if he or she is not highly skilled at the profession of painting or know how to do speciality finishes, your project it will end up being less than average. It's also likely that it could be the wrong color, sheen or worse.

This is where a "preferred" vendor makes sense! This means that this artisan has performed work at such a level that someone is willing to stake their reputation on his or her performance! Now this my friends, is a “Preferred vendor”.

As far as qualifications are concerned, here are just a few of mine: I grew up washing oil base brushes and rollers in a bucket of kerosene at the age of 9. You see my father is a master painter who has painted for over 60 years. He would take me out to farms and ranches to scrape peeling paint off old farm houses and barns. I spent years learning how to scrape and sand because he would tell me that if a surface was not prepared correctly the paint job would fail prematurely and that would make for a dis-satisfied customer. In a small town of 20,000 your reputation is everything! Eventually he allowed me to apply the base coat of primers which is the building block to make a coating last. I can still remember him teaching me how to correctly cut in and roll. He would even show me the proper way to hold a brush and a roller pole. My father would correct me if I began to apply the paint in a non uniform fashion.   Learn how to paint

I remember that I used to see all of the other painters in town spraying and I would ask him why we didn't spray. He would just smile and say that one of the reasons our customers call us is because we brush and roll! After years of brushing and rolling I started to spray and quickly became the company "spray man". I sprayed cars for fun on the weekend. Spray Painting

One time a local bank called and wanted to know if we could strip and refinish some brand new bank desks and conference tables that had a coating issue by the company who supplied them the tables. The conversion varnish had been misapplied. When you wrote on the counters it left a carbon trace of your signature in the layers of the coating! It was on this job that I perfected my skill as a fine finisher. The tables had to look like glass. This is also when I first learned that finish work was sanded with a thousand grit paper! Just like you would use to sand cars. Specialty Finishes - Luxury Homes

Our family painting company accepted all types of commercial painting throughout New Mexico. I soon found that my work was being inspected by the corps of engineers and I quickly learned what a mil thickness gauge was and after thousands of gallons I was painting for NASA on the Northrup strip.

Soon it was time for me to leave the family company and start painting on my own. I moved to Temple Texas which was booming at that time and began calling on architects. Within weeks I found myself painting multi-million dollar homes for doctors! Here is the crazy part, at the age of 24, I was painting custom homes for $90,000 and up! Eventually I followed the boom to Arizona and to this day I remember looking up Camelback mountain and saying I wonder what it takes to get those people to call you. I was already a great painter and a fine finish specialist! But it would take another 20 years to master decorative coatings such as Venetian plaster, Italian plaster, gold leaf, and marbling. Not only do they call me from Camelback mountain but many others! You see a preferred vendor is a dedicated craftsman who has honed their skill every day and night to become a “preferred vendor”!
