These are GREAT suggestions....I have a whole house generator that has just been serviced and our tank is full. I have food AND I filled up the tank of my SUV in case I need to go somewhere and the power is out to local pumps.
Why Frankenstorm Could be the Storm of the Century!
Unfortunately, it looks like Frankenstorm will be visiting the Northeast for Halloween so be prepared. Forecasters are predicting the storm’s center is likely to make landfall along the New Jersey/Delaware coast late Monday into early Tuesday and then continue up the
coast traveling to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont and Maine.
What makes Frankenstorm so dangerous is the likelihood of it converging with cold air and a winter storm coming from the West and exceptionally high tides due to a full moon.
The combination of a tropical storm slamming into a cold air system from the West could cause a “monstrous hybrid vortex”; a deadly combination of a Nor’ Easter and Hurricane.
Meteorologists report this kind of storm is unprecedented due to the combined elements of a massive tropical cyclone combining with a westerly winter storm and exceptional high tides converging to form what could be the storm of the century.
Coastal areas can expect up to 10 foot water surges due to already high tides from the full moon and up to 12 inches of rain causing monumental flooding, along with 70 mile winds and strong winds gusts.
Frankenstorm has already claimed the lives of 41 people in the Caribbean due to falling trees and collapsed buildings.
Tips to prepare for Frankenstorm and power outages:
Turn your refrigerator and freezer up to their maximum cold before the electricity goes out.
A full fridge will keep food fresh for 48 hours and 24 hours when half filled…if you don’t open it a lot.
Keep your pet’s safe inside with plenty of water and food on hand.
Buy bottled water….or purify water and store.
Stay inside - this should be obvious, but the allure of taking photos can make me people do stupid things!
Locate/buy flashlights and batteries (if they aren’t sold out.)
Fill up your car with gas so if the pumps aren’t working, you have a full tank should you have to evacuate.
Charge your cell phone and keep your car charger handy in case of power loss.
Buy foods like peanut butter and jelly, cereal, canned goods, bread, cheese and crackers, fruit and cut up veggies with dip for snacks.
Remove anything not nailed down on your porch, patio and decks along with garbage cans.
Remove anything in your basement that could get water damage.
Locate extra blankets in case of power loss.
Keep all interior doors shut and shades down.
Fill bathtubs and large containers with water for bathing, flushing toilets, but do not drink this water.
