Photos of Lindenhurst NY After Hurricane Sandy

Lindenhurst NY south of Montauk Highway is a disaster area. At least 100 homes are completely destroyed. Some homes went right into the Great South Bay. The tide was high at 8 p.m. Monday night when Sandy arrived and then again at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning. This is why this area is devasted.

The National Guard and Suffolk County police have every street south of Montauk Highway blocked off starting from S. Wellwood Avenue & West to Copiague. It really is disheartening to see.

Some photos below I took and some were taken by others:

The National Guard is there to keep control of who is coming and going.
Everyone needs to show I.D. before entering any of the streets south of Montauk Highway.

The woman below was on S. 4th Street. She was spray painting
the words on everyone's curbside trash: Keep Out
Too many people with pick up trucks coming around and going
through everything while these homeowners were cleaning out
their homes. That is just not right.

I'm sure the photos don't show how truly horrible it is. Thanks for the photos & I pray that things go well & get back to 'normal' as soon as possible for those that the storm effected.

So thankful you are safe, Jackie.  Here across the country it is so easy for people to forget, once it's no longer in the headlines or on the news.  Praying for all in these areas.  :'(

Jackie, stay safe and be careful.  Our friends and relatives on Long Island say it's dangerous!  Lots of looting, vandalism, and other unseemly behavior going on.  It's so sad.   I grew up on Long Island, and seeing these pictures breaks my heart!

Oh, my heart hurts.  This is so very sad.  We all need to do what we can to support each other!  I was happy to see the Red Cross Fundraiser on TV last night.  They made it very easy to donate.

Terrible to hear of looting and vandalism - and wonderful to hear of friends and family helping each other.

I'm glad you and yours are safe.

Thanks everyone for stopping by to comment. I have spent days helping my brother and others clear out their homes. I'm at the office now to get some work done and clear my head. For those of you who have family and friends on Long Island, let me know if they need help with anything. Also let them know that gas is on its way. The gas shortage should be cleared up in the next few days.

Bad new now and I'm definitely not making light of it. But at the end of the day and when the dust all settles and the water resedes your communities will be much better off that they were before the event. Good luck.

Hi Jackie,

Just can’t believe what’s going on up there. We live in Earthquake country and the last devastation we experienced was in 94 w/the Northridge earthquake. It seems like it takes a loooong while before things get back to normal. Stay strong and positive and you will get through this. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people of the Northeast.

Jackie, it's a terrible time you Re experiencing. I pray that the emergency crews will have the strength and expertise necessary to help people get their basic needs restored, and then on to enormous relief efforts.

Hi Nan, thank you very much!

Hi John, hopefully. People need places to live since they still have no power, water, heat, etc.

Hi Dimitri, thank you so much! I would rather this than an earthquake for sure.

Hi Karen, the crews are working on 3 hours of sleep to get power back.
