Hurricane Sandy and sporting events!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Tampa Properties

Hurricane Sandy has now completed her swing through the northeastern United States and the damage photos and news reports are very stressful to watch, even for those of us who live far from the destruction.  What is the saying, "if not for the grace of God, there go I!"

I live in Florida, we generally have one or two scares every year with hurricanes, but it has now been over seven years since any portion of the state took a major hit from a hurricane.  Others have not been so lucky!

Now, the Northeastern US is in the process of recovering from a catastrophic even caused by Hurricane Sandy and a sporting event has come into play.

The annual New York City Marathon is scheduled to be run this Sunday, November 4th.  Many of the people involved, paid organizers and volunteers have been severely affected, have lost their homes, do not yet have power restored and yet the mayor of New York has stated that the event will be run as scheduled.

The mayor did however, ask the National Basketball Association (NBA) to cancel a scheduled game pairing the New York Knicks and the Brooklyn Nets to cancel their scheduled game tonight, stating that the mass transit system is not yet functioning and the police are needed elsewhere.

What is going to happen in the next 72 hours that will cure the losses of so many and allow this event to "run" as scheduled?  Why can't the NYC Marathon be postponed for a few weeks or even canceled?  My guess is that revenue to the city and metropolitan area is at stake to the tune of millions, if not hundreds of millions of dollars.

A sad thought when so many are still suffering and will be long after the winner is crowned and forgotten!

Steven, I am not sure what to say. Marathon is a national (and perhaps International) for NY - and yes, I did see Brian Williams news segment earlier this evening - and realized how difficult it is for New Yorker! You are right - what will change in next 3 days that will help NY to host this event?

It ws estimated that the city produces 4 billion in revenue daily. Disaster is part of life, and life is cruel at the same time. Just be lucky you are not the victim this time around.

Steven,

Yes Thank God! We in Florida were lucky in the past 6-7 years from the perils of the weather. I know the people in NewYork/New Jersey are resilient and will overcome this disaster. Hoping the NBA/NFL games start soon as per schedule, as a means of entertainment for the people affected.

Take care

Apparently the powers that be have decided to cancel/postpone the race as too many affected areas are still without power and the route is not yet clear for the runners.  Additional, problems include the fact that many of the race attendees hotel/motel rooms are now filled with evacuees from the floods and damaged homes.

I don't think this is an easy call.  The marathon would bring a lot of needed business to the city, however, I don't know if the pros outweigh the cons in this situation.

Hi Steven, we suspect it is the diversion of too many resources needed in the clean up.  Police, etc.

Apparently somebody got to the mayor of NYC, yet the cycle of life continues, regardless, doesn't it?

Steven, I couldn't imagine how the marathon could still go on after all devastation. Hopefully it can be rescheduled so that revenue from the event will not be lost by a city that needs it now more than ever. Aloha!

The race was cancelled or at least postponed, but the hotels in the area that have power are apparently packed with people who lost their homes and since they have to eat somewhere, the city is still getting a pretty good boost from some of the very people who are hurting most.

I felt the same way on Thursday and Wednesday and Tuesday. I guess Mayor Bloomberg had to be coerced on Friday inconveniencing a zillion people and finally coming to his senses. Guess rescheduling is just too difficult.

NY has bigger priority to house and clothe the victums, and rightly so. The economy and real estate will suffer greatly, image the houses under contract and now destroyed. My prayers go out to all effected, and hope that it will be over and normalized soon!

Hi Steven,

The only thing sports events are good for after a devastation like this is, people get to have some entertainment in order to somewhat forget about, what just happened. Another good thing could be the proceeds go to the victims, but, it will take a loooong time before things are “normal” after something like this.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people of the Northeast who have been affected. God bless.

I came late to this blog but happily the mayor saw the light and cancelled it. But not in time to have the support team and probably many runners show up. am interested to read the fallout.
