Has your child ever asked you for a pony? Well now you can sponsor one and get all the benefits of owning a horse without nearly what it usually costs! You can also sponsor a pig, a miniature horse, a miniature donkey, a goat, or a cat if a horse is too much for you!
We have a rescue in Pembroke Pines called F.R.I.E.N.D.S. that saves horses and other farm animals. They have implemented family friendly community programs, including the Sponsor-A-Horse Program. They house 52 horses, 2 miniature donkeys, 9 pot bellied pigs, 1 farm pig, 3 goats, and a cat (and a partridge in a pear tree). Their costs have shot through the roof (feed is now $13K a month), so this program is becoming critical for funding. The organization runs solely on the generosity of the community, grants, trusts, foundations, and the money generated by the Sponsor-A-Horse Program. There are 22 horses that are not sponsored at the moment; 12 are ready to ride, 2 are on injured, and 8 can never be ridden again.
If anyone is serious about testing the waters of horse ownership, or just wants the experience without the price tag, this is a great place to start. The contract has no term or lease, and you have access to the facility and animals whenever you'd like. If you can't sponsor an animal, you make a contribution and have your name placed on the Memorial Wall (or make a contribution in someone's name) and/or donate items off their wish list (www.EiaHorses.org).
