People communicating at a home inspectionInterpersonal relationhsip-building skills - we all have the ability, but can we achieve the level of success that is required? How many of these techniques do you implement? Just remember that building relationships is the foundation of all connections in life - not just business, but also personal and familial. Ask yourself - Am I a good friend?

In the business world we all know the importance of marketing. Even the Atlanta Home Inspector attends various meetings around the metro area in order to meet prospective clients and learn more about other local businesses. While it is extremely important to set a firm foundation, building new client relationships, it is equally important to nurture those relationships in order to keep them intact. Just like in any relationship, a lack of attention will place a strain on the union.

Keeping the relationship fresh

The home inspector in Atlanta keeps his clients happy and acknowledged, by always sending a thank you card. However, he doesn’t stop there. Any client who provides a recommendation on websites such as Angie’s List, Kudzu or our own company website can receive gift cards to local restaurants or other establishments. It is not rare for the company to receive updated information from past clients who just want to chat. It is also common for clients to see an inspector in the grocery and stop to say hello. Of course, if the inspector recognizes the client first, then he will make the first approach, striking up a conversation.

Perhaps the strongest bonds are between the inspectors and the real estate agents. In order to keep the relationships fresh, new ideas must be tossed around. Aside from the thank you cards that are sent to every agent, there are hand-written letters, special occasion letters, special candy or brownie deliveries, refillable chocolate bowls or houses within the agency offices, routine special mailers with coupons and learning materials, and home-cooked meals served cafeteria- style. It is important to stay in communication, not only by mail, but also in person. When an agent or an entire office has visual recognition they will be more likely to contact that inspector for future services.

Implementing Strategies

  • If relationship building in the business world is new to you, it is good to read marketing articles and/or talk to other’s who are implementing certain strategies. It is common to see companies jump on the bandwagon once they see something working. While this might seem to weaken the impact of the gesture, and at times it does, overall, it is not about which method chosen, so much as the honesty behind the relationship. Clients, agents, relatives, and neighbors all know when someone is not being honest. You should not always assume that the honest efforts you make today will become plentiful fruit tomorrow. It can take time, creativity, and determination to form new bonds.
  • If writing is difficult for you, seek help from someone who enjoys writing, and can convey your thoughts on paper. By communicating what you intend, the writer can then create a message to send for you.
  • If crafting is not your thing, then seek help from someone who is crafty and innovative. By communicating what you want to make, an artistic person can create then create what you describe.
  • If public speaking is frightening for you, seek help from a marketing manager, or gifted speaker. Someone with stage presence and natural ability can bring your business to life by presenting your ideas for you.
  • If it is not feasible to hire extra employees for each task, then it is important to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses in order to know where to delegate certain portions of the process.

Now that you know some strategies and how to implement them, you should feel a bit more comfortable meeting new people, area business owners, and potential clients. Just remember that we are all human. And we are all trying to build relationships.

Your points are good but are very general, which makes them easier to say (or read) than do. Tips that can be acted on today are more valuable.

I was not being critial of what you do, but looking at it with a readers view. Tips that a reader can practice immediately is what I would recommend for a blog as compared to what I took to be a more philisopical or attitudeinal approach that, though good and worthwhile, is a more long term approach.
