Two Really Lazy Lazy Susans

By
Home Inspector with Jay Markanich Real Estate Inspections, LLC 3380-000723

New construction, new kitchen, new cabinets (never used) and two really lazy Lazy Susans.

Each inside corner of a U shape of kitchen cabinets had a Lazy Susan.

The top of the Lazy Susan is very high!

People will need a ladder to get to the top one!

But that isn't the only problem.

Looking into the cabinet neither Lazy Susan was plumb.

Both were leaning badly!

How badly?

Certainly very badly!

Neither was even close to plumb.

Doesn't that affect how well the trays turn?

Seems to me it does!

We could see how much it was leaning before I put the level on it.

But it always helps to have a level and demonstrate it.

Photos never hurt, especially with recalcitrant builders.

My recommendation:  never assume.  When on new construction, check every drawer, check every cabinet door, check inside every cabinet.  Why check it all?  Well, you know what happens when we ASSume.

Jay, looks like quality control has gone out the window. That is if the window is plumb and you can open it.

I had these lazy susans installed and afterwards, my son who was a toddler tested them no problem. He would climb on the lower shelf and spin around...Product worked just fine....good post

I actually met a guy on a construction site who didn't know how to 'read' a level tool. Talk anout half a bubble out of plumb.

Plumb - level, what's the difference? ....Vertical and horizontal.

Square and true....now that's a puzzeler:)

Jay, to be politically correct those are "revolving shelves" :)

The only lazy ones in your story are the cabinet makers - shouldn't they have checked this?

Jay -- for those revolving shelves to be out of plumb, doesn't the shelf it is sitting on have to be unlevel?  How did they do that, is the floor not level?

Jay, I could even tell it was off by the photo even before the bubble-off-center photo (which is how some would describe ME). They won't turn right and will only frustrate an owner as well as eventually come tumbling down or fall apart in some other manner.

Congrats on the star!

Nice catch. If the lazy susan is leaning like that, it definitely won't work properly once it has items on it.

Jay-Pictures are critical to the inspection process to me. Document the flaw, show the area the needs to be addressed (reduces search time for whoever does the repair), and confirm the repairs were done.

Who knows Doug.  I don't think the installer cared a whit!

You hit it Debbie.  You have seen this house before and will again.  I am mixing it up with other properties!

So, Fred, they should put canned soup on one side and marshmallows on the other?  And I prefer to let Susan keep taking the heat!

The windows all worked, Mike, but one bath vent was so cockeyed on the outside I predicted the flaps wouldn't open.  Guess what...

Silvia - and they come in stereo!  Both sides, evenly leaning!

That's a great test Richie!  These were kind of small though, the largest maybe only 24" in diameter.

Robert - and more of a problem every year apparently!  Once a building supervisor asked me what I meant by "dipped nails."  He asked, "Dipped in what?"

I'll accep that Charlie.  I am quite more partial to revolvers than double actions, but I am good with both.

No Margaret, no.  And it is mean of you to think that.     ;>)

Actually, Steven, this house was built on a hill and these devices are the only thing really level!  You caught me in my little joke!

Thanks Gayle.  That's not how I would describe you.  But I'm still wondering about that red hat on your head.

Right on Jon.  But the cabinet guys don't understand that!

Wayne - this one would be hard for the buyer to forget!

Ginger - perhaps it is genetic?

I believe the angle is deliberate. That way the cans and jars slide towards you.

The heavy stuff will sink to the bottom, which is the rear Jim!  But hey, at least that way the marshmallows are always in the front!  Silver lining, you know.

Jay, I just got a level app for my iPhone, and I wouldn't even need it to figure out how lazy this Susan is.  Yikes!

Thank you Gary.  But understand, home inspectors aren't out there trying to find stuff wrong.  We just observe and report!  When I see something odd, like a leaning Lazy Susan, I report it!
