What's In A Name?

What's in a name?Have you ever thought about what is in a name?  Nowadays there are some pretty crazy names out in the world.  Names I've never heard of.  Names that were completely made up from out of no where, letters just thrown together, or a name that I know, but is spelled some absolutely crazy way.  What about the names of inanimate objects that are given to babies?  Do parents ever wonder how this affects these kids as they grow older and become adults and are out in the working world?

The reason I have these questions going through my brain is because I have received two real estate referrals because of my name.  The first referral came back in 2008.  The agent choose me because we shared the same first name, "Dawn".  Now, for those that receive an unusual name, the chance of this happening would be slim.  I never thought about ever receiving a referral just because of my name, but it happened and I got a paycheck!

Well. now it has happened a second time.  This time the buyer found me.  He searched through some Keller Williams Company web sites and viewed agent profiles and names.  He contacted me and we are meeting on Tuesday.  He and his wife immigrated from Poland some 20 years ago and had been living in Florida.  They recently decided to move to the Denver area and purchase a home.   And you are wondering why he chose me?    My last name and I are Polish!  My grandfather was born and raised in Posen, Poland.  The Fabiszak family had a big farm in Posen.   My grandfather, Kashmir, and his brothers all eventually immigrated to America because of the war.  My Dad's mother is also Polish. Unfortunately I never met my Dad's parents.  They passed away before he even got married.   Dad was the youngest of eight kids,  That makes me third generation here in the states on his side.

So, does this make you wonder what's in a name??

Hi Dawn,

It is interesting how a name can make the difference in how a prospect chooses to work with us.  Congrats on the lead and here's to hoping it turns into a closed transaction quickly.

Dawn Dray is in England a cart pulled by a donkey kinda tells you about the name doesn't it.  So I'm the cart being pulled by a smelly donkey all day long.  :~)

I thought my first referral back in 2008 was cool.  She went through the CRS book and wasn't intentionally looking for a "Dawn", but once she stumbled upon my name in the area she was referring to, she knew it was fate!

Jordan ~ I do usually ask where or how the client came to choose me.

James ~ I don't think of you that way!

Roger ~ So far for me it has been good!

Jeff ~ Hah!   Hopefully not too many different "names."

People want to work within their comfort level and so a name can make a big difference.  I think teachers have a hard time finding a name for their children because they have had issues with names attached to some kids.

Reminds me of the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" -- You're right, what's in a name is plenty and many people who immigrated changed their names to sound less "ethnic" which I've always thought was a pity.  I'm glad you kept your name and both seemed to pay off. :-)

Dawn I just read recently that someone named their new baby Hashtag because they were fans of Twitter.   Maybe you should put your middle name out there too and get a third referral.

Dawn,  I've never given what's in a name much thought.  I would think that people may refer based on gender and/or age (of course without disclosure) than by a name.  Your name is working for you ... that is awesome.

Dawn, I don't know that anyone has chosen to work with me because of my name.  I do know that some people end up working with me because of connections we've made because where we used to live or people we know.  I have worked with some Greek clients who probably felt comfortable with me being Greek and recognizing my last name.

Dawn a name does make instant bond or instant move on somewhere else...we are so superficial sometimes...never the less once contact is made then we have our 30 seconds to impress or move on...BTW I have received numerous buyer and seller calls because of my name which happens to be Hungarian:)
