Boxing Day

By

Boxing Day is known throughout Europe! Traditionally we were taught that it was called boxing day because that is the day the people boxed up their presents and put them away, but many believe because the wealthy would give their servants the day off the day after Christmas and give them boxes of gifts to take to their families. No one really knows where the term came from. The English Premier League holds a full day of football schedules. The sales start in London on this day, much like our Black Friday.

Wow.... I just learned something new Yolanda.  From your title I was thinking this was national boxing day or something crazy like that.  I really like your version much better.

Tips and savings were placed in a clay box during the year.  On Boxing Day, the box was smashed and the money could be used.

Enjoy the holidays with family and friends.

Shoot, I have always wondered where that term, "Boxing Day" originated.  I kind of wondered if it was born here in the malls of America, where it looks like shoppers are boxing their way to get the best deals on the day after Christmas:-)

Yolanda

Always have known about boxing day in Britain, used to date a Liverpool honey. But till you wrote this have never questioned the origin, just wondered thereon. Just went to Wikipedia and here is their wisdom

In Britain, it was a custom for tradesmen to collect "Christmas boxes" of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year.[3] This is mentioned in Samuel Pepys' diary entry for 19 December 1663.[4] This custom is linked to an older English tradition: Since they would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, the servants of the wealthy were allowed the next day to visit their families. The employers would give each servant a box to take home containing gifts and bonuses, and sometimes leftover food.
