Give Your New Home A Fresh Start
In this 6-step guide on how to Give Your New Home A Fresh Start, you can ensure you start off with a clean (not just new) home.
An energetic person can definitely "do-it-yourself" as far as these cleaning tasks are concerned. However, moving and packing take a lot of energy. As a way to save time and conserve energy, I often recommend a professional cleaning service for move-in and move-out.
Give Your New Home A Fresh Start
Before you start moving in to your new home...here are some simple cleaning tips. You will sleep better and breathe easier, and you will be happy with a fresh start !
CLEAN THE WINDOWS. Not just with window cleaner and paper towels..I mean really clean them. Get a bucket with warm soap and water, use a sponge and a squeegee. Wash the window and the window sill. Lather, rinse, repeat! Use a good old fashioned chamois to dry the windows and really get rid of the streaks. Take down any blinds and curtains left behind and wash or replace.
CLEAN THE SCREENS. Use the same soapy water on newer screens that might be something other than aluminum. But for aluminum screens, try a cleaner that is used for aluminum auto wheels. Repair any damaged screens.
FURNACE FILTERS. Remove old filters and replace with new good quality filters. This is not a place to go cheap, you want the air you breathe to be as clean as possible.
STEAM CLEAN THE CARPETS. There are do-it-yourself cleaning machines that you can rent, it may save you some money, but it is a lot of work. I am in favor of letting a professional clean the carpets.
CLEAN THE WOOD FLOORS. Sweep and vacuum first. Then follow up with a good cleaning. Damp mop with a white vinegar solution or a mild cleaner. I love the new hand held steam cleaners. They are very affordable now and easy to use. They do a great job and sanitize at the same time.
FRESHEN UP THE REFRIGERATOR. Wash the interior with mild soap and water and then add a fresh box of baking soda to freshen up and absorb odors. Vacuum the condenser coils to maximize energy efficiency. Pull the refrigerator out and clean the floor underneath. Give some attention to other appliances also.
CLEAN THE BATHROOMS. Use good quality bathroom cleaners for the tub and the toilets to remove soap scum and hard water stains. Replace toilet seats and covers. Clean grout on tub surrounds and floor tile. Caulk tubs, sinks and floor tiles.
This will give you a fresh start moving in to your new home.
