Pasadena is the second-largest city in Harris County, 17th-largest in Texas, and 162nd largest in the United States. The area was founded in 1893 by John H. Burnett of Galveston. Burnett, the founder named the area after Pasadena, California because of the perceived lush vegetation.

As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the city's population was 149,043. The Pasadena Volunteer Fire Department is the largest all volunteer municipal fire department in the United States.

Employment in Pasadena is closely linked to the ship-channel industries, Bayport Industrial District, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center in adjacent Clear Lake. San Jacinto College and Texas Chiropractic College are located in Pasadena. Musical entertainment ranges from the fare at Gilley's Country and Western Club to performances of the Pasadena Philharmonic Orchestra. The Pasadena Historical Museum, Bay Area Museum, Armand Bayou Nature Center, Pasadena Rodeo, and San Jacinto Strawberry Festival are major tourist attractions.

All of the district's 58 schools earned an "Academically Acceptable" rating. Of those 58 schools, 41 were rated either "Exemplary" or "Recognized."

Of the district's 35 elementary schools, 33 earned one of those two high ratings.
Seven district schools - all elementary schools - are rated as "Exemplary" in the latest report. Those schools are Atkinson, Burnett, Frazier, Freeman, Meador, Pearl Hall and South Houston.
