Mardis Gras Madness - Dallas Wind Symphony Style - Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center

MeyersonFat Tuesday was celebrated in grand style at the Meyerson Symphony Center last night. Maestro Jeff Hellmer opened the celebration with a stirring rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner," which left the audience cheering. The electrifying evening was a history of revelry through music. The audience traveled from the United States to Brazil and destinations in between. If you closed your eyes you were certain that you were in a jazz bar in New Orleans, on a Caribbean beach, or at Carnival in Rio. Maestro Hellmer encouraged the audience to applaud any time and we did! He also encouraged dancing in the aisles and we did!

Pandemonium Steel Band from Garland High School joined the Dallas Wind Symphony on the stage to whisk the audience away to the islands for some calypso music. These talented young musicians received a standing ovation for their performance.

The audience was fortunate to enjoy two new pieces composed by Gabriel Santiago, from Brazil. Santiago played "Galopeando" and "Vassourinhas." The world will be hearing more from this gifted composer.

The icing on the King's Cake was Brave Combo, one of the top dance bands in America and definitely a North Texas favorite. The group is known for their salsa, zydeco, blues, and polka music and more. They had the audience dancing the twist in the aisles.

What better way to end the evening than a lively performance of "When the Saints Go Marching In!"

This was a night at the Meyerson like no other. If they have this party again next year, I am in!

Sharon, This sounds like an experience that can literally awaken one's spirit.  Music has a profound effect on most of us. There are times I hear music (or someone singing) that causes involuntary goose bumps on my body as well as my eyes well up with tears.  I guess the word is it "moves" me.

Music has the ability to transport us to another place and time and elevate our spirit. Even those who are not fond of the symphony would have loved this performance.
