Preparing for a move

Whether you have moved every three years or this is your first time in twenty, the thought of moving can send chills down your spin and sweat to your palms.  You may wake up at night with a million things on your mind, which keeps you from falling back to sleep.  Relocating, down the street, to another state or across the country, can be a very stressful event.  But it doesn’t have to be that way.  Here are a few practical tips to help keep the pressure at bay.

1.      Keep a notebook handy: when a thought comes to mind, instead of stressing about it, write it down.

2.      De-clutter as soon as possible.  Begin to go through closets and junk areas and ask yourself this question “Have I used this thing in the past 12 months?”  If the answer is no, then think seriously about whether you need it.  Sell or donate your unwanted or unused items.

3.      Tell your friends and family.  Having support is always helpful, you can’t do it on your own.  If they offer to help, let them!

4.      Prepare the kids.  Allow each child to have their own box (or two).  They can put whatever they want in that box.  It gives them a feeling of control and that they are part of the process.

5.      Get boxes (buy them new or for free boxes, ask friends or check online ads, like craigslist).  Keep a couple in each room and begin with non essentials.  Label the box by room or contents.  That way you won’t forget what’s inside.

I have found that the more prepared and organized I am, the better the move goes.  And more importantly, the less stressed I feel in the months and weeks leading up to the big day.

Excellent tips.  Moving is usually quite a stressful time for everyone involved.
