7 Odd but Cool Events That Occurred on March 27
By Michelle Carr Crowe, Silicon Valley real estate guide selling homes in San Jose
What do Yosemite, Typhoid Mary and the Alaska Pipeline have in common? They all are connected as 3 of 7 interesting items of significance with anniversary dates of March 27.
If you’ve read my www.ActiveRain.com/Resultsblog, you know one of the pastimes I enjoy is learning new facts and interesting pieces of history.
Sometimes I come across intriguing stories while reading our local San Jose Mercury News, Mental Floss or Smithsonian Magazine. Other times I find articles or facts online at The History Place, Brainy History,Dates In Historyor the National Geographic Society. Today’s collection of facts was found at History Orb.
While these interesting items pique my curiosity, they (usually) have nothing to do with my real estate business, which is helping people like you buy and sell homes in Silicon Valley, Calif. and beyond. I admit, learning new facts just adds fun and joy to my brain, soul and life.
Here are today’s 7 Odd but Cool Events That Occurred on March 27. I hope you find them interesting, too.
1613 – The first English child born in Canada at Cuper's Cove, Newfoundland to Nicholas Guy.
1851 – First reported sighting of the Yosemite Valley by Europeans.
1871 – In the first international rugby football match, Scotland defeats England.
1915 – Typhoid Mary, the first healthy carrier of disease ever identified in the United States, is put in quarantine, where she would remain for the rest of her life (although she escaped and infected more people in between quarantine periods). It's only cool because she was finally stopped.
Her role as a carrier was discovered by Dr. John Soper who found that during a 5-year span serving as a cook for 8 different families, people from 7 of the families were infected by typhoid fever, with several deaths. She claimed to never have had typhoid, was healthy and refused to take even reasonable care to prevent spreading typhoid.
Most tellingly, she worked as a cook yet did not wash her hands before, during or after food preparation as she “saw no need.”
1975 – Construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System begins.
1980 – Silver Thursday: A steep fall in silver prices, resulting from the Hunt Brothers attempting to corner the market in silver, led to panic on commodity and futures exchanges.
1993 – Italian former minister and Christian Democracy leader Giulio Andreotti is accused of mafia allegiance by the tribunal of Palermo.
1998 – The Food and Drug Administration approves Viagra for use as a treatment for male impotence, the first pill to be approved for this condition in the United States.
