If You Can't Stand The Heat.....

Well, it’s not quite May and we have hit 100 degrees here in Phoenix - so summer is here.  I was sitting on the patio sipping on some iced tea and looking out at my yard while my husband barbequed this evening. I was thinking to myself how nice and beautiful our yard looked as little as two weeks ago when we were doing the same thing.  With this heat coming on our grass is turning brown and the plants leaves are turning a little yellow.  Now is the time I need to get out in the yard early in the morning to take care of this so that we are not embarrassed to have family and friends come over to enjoy weekends with us.

If you are looking to keep your yard looking good during the summer, here are some things you can do.  One of the most important items is weeding.  Be careful when spraying for weeds near the plants so that the overspray does not hurt your plants.  Spraying in the morning is a good idea so that the sun has a chance to “bake” the spray in during the heat of the day.  Fertilize your plants, especially if the leaves are beginning to turn yellow. Spread mulch around the soil of the plants that get direct sun so that the roots stay cooler. Potted plants may need to be watered more than once a day and pots may need to be moved to a shady place so that they don’t get hot and hurt the root system.  Make sure that the drip system in the yard is working well and the hoses are not soft and the tops have not popped off.

I can’t wait to start in the morning to get the yard looking it’s best for our get togethers this season with our family and friends.
