My client just moved into her home with all of her previous furniture. One of the items was a china hutch she has had for many years. She was not sure about whether to keep the hutch or not, asking if they have gone out of style. We discussed many different options for the hutch and I thought I would share because some of it was quite interesting.
- Take the top off and utilize the bottom as a buffet extension to her kitchen cabinets.
- Take the doors off the top and utilize as a bookshelf in the child’s bedroom.
- Take the doors off and utilize as extra storage in a closet (would look like a California Closet system)
- Utilize the top (with or without doors) underneath a wall mounted tv for books, dvd’s, game storage
- Utilize the bottom portion as a linen storage in a bathroom
So, the question of keeping the china hutch became an easy one. She wanted to keep it. However, it does not house dishes in the kitchen or dining room. The bottom portion of her hutch is now used for linen storage in her powder room. She has decorated it with pictures, a small lamp and keepsakes. It makes for an interesting conversation piece. The top of the hutch is now painted primary colors and stores books and stuffed animals in her son’s room. This is a great way to repurpose a wonderful piece of furniture.
