The Mount Vernon Estate is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Northern Virginia and DC area. Sitting on the banks of the Potomac River it isn't hard to see why George Washingon choose the location for his home. Though the original estate was estimated at 8,000 acres the estate today encompases 50 acres including the house, outbuildings and gardens.
When the estate was rescued by the Mount Vernon Ladies Association in 1858 it had been stripped of most of the Washington's belongings. Since then the estate has been restored and many of the original artificats and furniture brought back. For history buffs you can take all day to tour the grounds.
