Stowe Vermont Waterfalls to Visit This Summer! Part 1: Moss Glen Falls

By

Moss Glen Falls, Stowe, Vermont

Moss Glen Falls in Stowe, Vermont is a spectacular waterfall to visit this summer. The Moss Glen Brook flows through a forest before the stream turns into a narrow confined gorge.  The stream goes over several cascades and small falls before dropping into a pool at the top of the last drop. The total drop of the waterfall is 125 feet which makes it one of the largest falls in Vermont. Most of the cascades in the gorge are inaccessible without rappelling gear. Moss Glen Falls includes a plunge, horsetail and fan.

Moss Glen Falls is very scenic.  You will certainly want to bring your camera, and maybe even a tripod to do a timed exposure of the flowing water.  Be sure to explore the waterfall from its various vantage points as it looks very different from varying angles.  The main hiking trail brings you directly across from the falls which is its most popular spot to be photographed.  You can also get some nice pictures from the top of the falls as well as looking up from the bottom of the falls.  The stream is very shallow and it is fun to walk across the rocks to walk very close to being under the falls.  There are many large boulders to scramble on which would make an ideal place to enjoy a picnic lunch while watching and listening to the thundering roar of the waterfall.

If you are lucky, you will see Peregrine Falcons nesting in the cliffs next to the fall!

Moss Glen Falls is located in Putnam State Forest. From Stowe Village, take Route 100 North for about three miles.  As Route 100 bears to the left, bear right onto Randolph Road.  Make the first right onto Moss Glen Falls Road.  There is a small parking area for about eight cars a short distance down the road.  The trail is easy to follow and is about a seven to ten minute flat walk with about a fifty foot elevation gain near the falls.

Come visit Moss Glen Falls and enjoy part of what makes Stowe, Vermont a wonderful place to live!
