Important Birding areas in Page Springs AZ

Page Springs got it's name from the Page family, who were early settlers in the area.  But the name Cornville has a more colorful folklore attached to it. Nobody can say with any degree of certainty how Cornville got it's name.  One yarn is that there was a family named Cohn and the post office was to be named after them.  When the paperwork came back from Washington DC, they had misread it and named it "Cornville".  The problem with that story is that there was no one documented in the 1880 census that had that name.  The closest name was "Cone". Mr. Cone and Mr. Houghton had purchased a homestead which is now Page Springs. Another story points to James Dunning Tewksbury who was born in Cornvile, Maine in 1823.  The Tewksbury's were involved in a range war which had the cattle ranchers fighting the sheep herders for the feeding range.

The Cornville area was originally settled by the Sinagua. The Sinagua disappeared early in the 1500's but some of the Hopi believe they are the descendents of the Sinagua. In written history, the Yavapai are shown to be the earliest settlers of the area. The Yavapai were a friendly people who got along well with the Spanish explorers. However the Apache and Navajo were a more increasingly hostle people but by the 1880's, the hostilities ended and the settlers, mostly ranchers and farmers, established the area. The current population is around 3300.

Page Springs/Cornville share the same zip code.  When folks talk about either Page Springs or Cornville, it is assumed that the other part of the area is included in the discussion.  Generally most people agree that Page Springs sits on Lower Oak Creek and meanders with the creek and at some indistinct point becomes Cornville! Actually, by the time you hit Cornville Road, you know you are in Cornville.
