We are supposed to hit all kinds of heat records here in Northern Virginia this week. Here are 10 things to consider if you are looking for something 'cool' to do!
- Reston's Bow Tie Cinema has a free kids summer series (first come, first serve, seating limited by theater capacity) Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 a.m.. This Tuesday and Wednesday (July 16 and 17, 2013) they are showing Madagascar. Bow Tie Cinema Kids Club
- The National Smithsonian Museums are open and air-conditioned! If you want to save yourself the trip into DC, why not hit the Udvar-Hazy Air and Space Museum on Route 28? If you have done the museums a million times, there is an IMAX theater, too! Smithsonian Museums
- Skyline Caverns is not too far away and the temperatures are much cooler under ground! They even have a scavenger hunt form to keep the kids interested while they are there! Don't miss the online coupon. Skyline Caverns
- Ice skating at Capital's training rink, Kettler Capital Iceplex. This week (July 15-19, 2013) enjoy $5 skating sessions from 1:40 to 3:40 p.m. Check the calendar before going, in case of scheduling changes. Kettler Capitals Iceplex
- Cool off in Fairfax County Park Authority's Water Mine, Family Swimmin' Hole. Arrive early and make a day of it! The Water Mine
- Kids are free this summer at the Newseum. It is a great place to explore...and if you save your ticket, you can come back the next day for free! Newseum
- International intrigue is always cool...and the Spy Museum has something for everyone! Spy Museum
- Just down the road in Harrisonburg, Virginia is Massanutten. Their waterpark is lots of fun (my 17 year old son called it 'quality') there are indoor and outdoor water features, and you may find the mountain air is a bit cooler. Massanutten Water Park
- For some indoor play time, Dave & Busters is just over the Potomac River in Bethesda.
- Go see how money is made at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
