Santa Fe Rabbits and Birds... Another Birdseed Mystery

Emily Medvec Santa Fe Blog

Every morning before sunrise I return my birdfeeder back to its post and food source for the birds and yes... rabbits and so many other surprises. I bring the feeder in at night to make sure any of the wandering bears passing by down from the mountain do not stop at my home. You see my bird feeder has become the center for activity beyond the birds for my local wildlife park. Perhaps the birds are on twitter tweeting about it which brings so many others as soon as the feeder is back.. In the past month, one of the visiting ground squirrels have learned to climb the pinon tree; three deer have discovered how to use their tongues to twist the feeder and enjoy a feast of seeds. Fortunately their birdfeeder manners border on sloppy and there is tons of food left on the ground for the rabbits.

A young bobcat has passed by several times only to watch the birds. The deer often take an afternoon nap in the shade of the pinon pines and juniper trees around my home. The coyotes and rabbits fortunately keep missing each other at birdfeeder central. They pass through my arroyo and let me know they are there with a howl every now and then. It appears like the bobcat, birdseed is not a treat for them. The bear tracks I see in the arroyo remind me to retrieve the feeder at dusk. I now go to sleep wondering if the rabbits I see every morning hopping happily from their homes to feast on what the finches drop on their heads will one day grow wings.

Take the time to feed the birds. The birds have so many life lessons to give and stories for us tell each other.

I didn't see the pic with the bobcat in it but we had one in our backyard a few years back. They are simply cool to see in the wild... if you consider your backyard wild lol

Good morning Emily and by the way it's good to see you again.  Indeed wildlife is filling our backyard as well.  I guess you've heard of the bears visiting the Abq metro area on a frequent basis in search of food and water.  Can't blame the bears they were here first is my thinking.  We had one wondering in our neighborhood he was caught and relocated North or so we were told.

Hi Dave, as for the bobcat, I could not move fast enough to get the batteries back in my camera and I was talking on my iphone! And yes, I live in a wildlife park...:)!

Hi John, we had a bear captured yesterday in the Rancho Viejo subdivision yesterday which is south of Santa Fe and a good distance from our foothills. And yes, good to see you as well. I recently moved to Keller Williams. Let's plan to get together soon. I hope you are doing great!

Hi Joan, bobcat was beautiful and fast. It was a rare moment I was at home in the afternoon. Her visit was a gift.

My friends have several bird feeders and make a trip to the feed store every week. Those are hungry little birds and keep coming back for more. I am sure the birds are loving your efforts toward them too.

Emily, I love that you feed the birds. I have a feeder on my patio.  The squirrels run circles around the fence and patio decking and launch their bodies at the feeder causing it to drop seed to the ground so they can eat it. The squirrels re damaging my fence and patio covering with their claws ... and I really don't care. I love to feed the birds.

Hi Kathy, yes the picture is 100% me. When my black lab companion left the planet it was time for me to fly solo and create a new image online. It is good to hear you too work to feed the birds! Thanks for the welcome back. I am back home in my online office here on the rain...

Hi Kathleen, our squirrels are called ground squirrels but sometimes they leap on to the feeder and of course fall off. Birdfeeders and all they attract certainly are worth the effort. It is amazing to hear the stories. Thanks for commenting. I hope you are doing well in San Jose!

Hi Emily,

I fill my feeders every morning and watch for the red tailed hawks who like to pick off the birds once in a while. I am fascinated by the raptor birds but adore my backyard birds too and do not want them harmed. I have to accept the way of nature. Thanks for a great post and get us a bobcat picture when you can.
